Do Not Open

Do Not Open-1-Design Crush

San Francisco-based designer and letterer Erik Marinovich’s Do Not Open project shows how even the most basic thing – mail! – can be elevated to art-level status. In fact, you can even commission your own. I think one of Erik’s pieces would make a great gift for new homeowners or any letter lover.

Remember the feeling you’d get when a letter arrived from a pen pal or that girl you met at summer camp? Those were the good ole’ days, right? Lately, all you come home to is a pile of Bed Bath and Beyond coupons. If a nice hand lettered envelope is missing from your life than you’ve come to the right place.

Richard Johnson

Richard Johnson-1-Design Crush

Richard Johnson has spent the past six  years traveling across Canada photographing more than 650 ice huts. Along the way he’s documented the similarities and differences in ice hut architecture between provinces. All have the same purpose of being weather-resistant and portable, but beyond that the real personality of each shelter begins.

State Plates Project

State Plates Project-1-Design Crush

License plate design is clearly very niche, very design by committee, and very bad. Usually. As the folks behind the State Plates Project say, “Over the past 50 years, the American license plate has taken a turn for the worst. We’re here to change that.” Fifty designers, fifty states, fifty license plates I wish were the real deal.

Before I introduce you to this year’s 365-day project, I just want to take a moment and thank you all for embracing last year’s #365quotes project and making it so rewarding. I never could have anticipated the response I received and I’m crossing my fingers that you’ll all roll with the punches and embrace #365lyrics just as much. That’s right, this year’s days are going to be filled with meaningful lyrics that resonate – whether that’s a punch in the gut, an eye-opening string of words, or a huge belly laugh. You can join in by following @designcrush on Instagram if you’re not already, and feel free to leave your favorite lyrics in the comments here or there.
