Let’s Talk Chandeliers

Staggered Glass Chandelier

Lighting is perhaps the element I most look forward to when designing a room – the right finish, the perfect glow, everything comes together to set the mood in that just right way. Chandeliers in particular are the icing on the proverbial cake of decorating, and I don’t think they’re utilized often enough. Think past the dining room and entryway to the bathroom, the bedroom, and beyond to take any room to the next level.

Coil + Drift

Brooklyn-based Coil + Drift was founded in 2014 by John Sorensen-Jolink, an acclaimed modern dancer-turned-designer. The studio creates contemporary furniture, lighting, and accessories with a focus on form, sustainability, and function. Sorensen-Jolink taught himself how to design in an attempt to further understand space and the objects within them. I’m looking forward to keeping an eye on what is for sure an up and coming brand!

10 Benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps

I’ve long admired the aesthetics of Himalayan salt lamps, and after doing some research last autumn I bought one. These artful light sources aren’t just a treat for the eyes, they also have a slew of benefits to accompany their warm glow.

Himalayan salt lamps are made out of just that, hollowed out blocks of pure Himalayan salt. We’re surrounded by air that’s full of positive and negative ions. Positive ions, AKA electronic air pollution, are created by electronic devices and can contribute to health problems such as allergies, stress, and insomnia. Salt lamps work by emitting negative ions that create a cleansing effect on the air.

10 Benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps –

+ improves mood and concentration

+ purifies the air

+ reduces allergen and asthma symptoms

+ reduces stress

+ reduces insomnia

+ improves seasonal effective disorder

+ supports immune system

+ improves mood

+ boosts energy

+ reduces static electricity

Himalayan salt lamps do have a limited range, so you’ll want to place yours in the room in which you spend the most time. Check to make sure that your lamp is made from pure Himalayan salt rather than rock salt to experience actual benefits. And once purchased make sure to keep it away from humid spots like the bathroom, near the dishwasher, or by the washing machine.

Carrie Lamp + Carrie Lantern

carrie-lamp-1-design-crush

Autumn has finally shown its face in Pennsylvania, making me want to nest, wear socks, and light candles. I’m loving these two pieces from Norm Architectures – the Carrie Lamp and the Carrie Lantern – for creating a cozy evening ambiance. The Lamp is an upgrade of the Lantern, it’s USB-rechargable LED powered while the Lantern relies on a candle. (It can also function as a case though, so bonus.)

Vessel Lamps

I rely on an arc lamp and one table lamp to light my living room, but have been on the hunt for a second. SHare Studios, aka Stephanie Hare, has designed a stellar lineup of glass-bottomed vessel lamps that can be left empty or filled with whatever you’re feeling – a terrarium, fresh flowers, etc. I love the versatility and functionality.
