Pet Accessories from Shinola

Shinola-1-Design Crush

Joanna Hawley created Jojotastic as a place to spotlight everything from runway-fresh fashion to home interiors. Fellow animal hoarder and blogger, Joanna spends her spare time indulging in wanderlust, climbing rocks, and questing for the perfect apple pie.

Hailing from Detroit, Shinola is a long-time favorite for beautifully crafted leathergoods and watches. Recently, they partnered with photographer and animal-lover Bruce Weber on a collection of pet accessories. Like the rest of their pieces, the pet accessories are hand-made in America and made vegetable-tanned leather with brass hardware. Shinola also hopes to raise awareness with this collection for all rescue organizations, including the Michigan Humane Society and Best Friends.

Long-time golden retriever lover Bruce Weber also lent his photographic eye to the project. His strong belief that pets add meaning to our lives truly comes through in the photos, don’t you think?

DAAME

DAAME-1-Design Crush

Designing to make an impact in the world is a noble cause, and it’s exactly what DAAME is attempting to do. Their bags – a mini cross body/fanny pack, a 13″ laptop tote, and a 15″ laptop tote – are made with women on the go in mind. Each piece is handcrafted in the USA and with high quality Italian leather and a specially engineered Japanese lining. You can feel good making a DAAME purchase because 5% of all profits go towards providing long-term services and education for girls in impoverished circumstances.

Grain

Grain-1-Design Crush

Aside from creating beautifully designed wares, Grain has another purpose – a dedication to social and environmental responsibility. (You know how I love a company that gives back.)  As committed members of 1% For The Planet, one percent of Grain’s annual revenue goes back to environmental non-profits. Their work unites current manufacturing technologies and age-old craft techniques, and goods are produced in small batch runs in their Bainbridge Island studio. Good design plus conscientiousness equals all the more reason to buy! Check out my favorite pieces: Hung Mirror, Circlet Triple Sconce, Bound Hand V1, Grail Cassoulet, and Strung Sconce.

JOYN

JOYN-1-Design Crush

JOYN produces beautiful block-printed textiles, handbags, and accessories by hand in the foothills of the Himalayas. But Mel and Dave Murray’s company stands for much more than that. They’ve partnered with nonprofit JoyCorp to provide employees in Rajpur, India with not only a steady job and healthy work environment, but a daily meal plan, education for their children, English and vocational training, and medical care. That huge difference makes JOYN‘s pieces a hundred times more beautiful than they already are.

Every Mother Counts + Minted

Minted+Every Mother Counts-1-Design Crush

This past January I had the chance to sit down with Christy Turlington Burns, founder of Every Mother Counts, and Mariam Naficy, founder and CEO of Minted, to hear about their newly formed partnership. If you’re unfamiliar, Every Mother Counts is a non-profit organization created to increase public awareness and support for improved maternal and child health. EMC is committed to ending preventable deaths caused by pregnancy and childbirth around the world. You don’t have to be a mom to appreciate the importance of such things.

Minted+Every Mother Counts-2-Design Crush

For every art print purchased through Minted 2% is donated to Every Mother Counts. But Mother’s Day seemed like the perfect time to take things up a notch so they’ll be donating a whopping 20% of art print purchases! Order by April 28th and use the code DESIGNCRUSHEMC.

Minted+Every Mother Counts-4-Design Crush

Minted+Every Mother Counts-5-Design Crush

Minted‘s art, journals, stationery, and decorations are all great fits for Mother’s Day. I love the idea of putting together a special little brunch full of printed touches and decor with all of her favorite foods as a surprise. Or maybe creating a tiny version of a gallery wall with some favorite art and photography from Minted’s huge selection. Any way you look at it, this is a great fit for everyone!
