I absolutely LOVE this…. and if something went wrong, all you have to do is cut it off… 🙂

Although, from experience, coloring blonde hair is not as great as you would expect… the color fades way faster than you would think b/c when you bleach darker hair, it kind of damages it, so the color really soaks into the hair, with blonde hair, it isnt damaged, so it doesnt soak in as well…

    Im such a nerd, sorry

Seriously wishing I was blonde right about now to do this to my tips! Or would it still look cool with brown hair?

I’m obsessed with the dip-die technique! But the last time I highlighted my own hair it looked great for a couple months until I realized it was totally fried and never going to be normal again until it grew out. Still, I’m contemplating paying someone to do it this time 🙂

I definitely wanted to try a variation of this… but it got vetoed by my BF. He normally doesn’t have such a strong opinion about my hair -so he must of really hated it! But I still say – it’s a yes!

I’ve done a single color dip-dye with Kool-Aid when I was in high school. I’m a blond and a swimmer and you’d be surprised at how long Kool-Aid stays in hair, even without bleaching. My friend is a very dark brunette and she did pink and burgundy tips this summer, knowing that when school starts in the fall (we’re teachers) she could just trim off the ends. If I had more time left this summer I’d totally go all out with some color in my hair. This is inspiring me and I think that next June I’ll have some great color in my hair.

I have naturally blonde hair, and over the past four years, I’ve dyed it different colours. Last year I decided that red suited me best, so I’ve had red hair for a year. Anyway, a couple of months ago, I wanted to dip dye my hair, so I bleached it! It’s a very warm blonde and everyone comments on it saying I look like a walking flame. I don’t care, I love it! Very hard to maintain though!

I’m really considering trying this but first I wanted to know if anyone can tell if all of the tips are done the same length? Like to me it looks like some pieces have a longer length of color than others. If I do it, I want it to look good!

I did this with my dark brown hair and it looked so good! However, it’s starting to fade since its been about 2 weeks. I’m going to my stylist soon so he can fix it to make it stay longer! I like this look on myself better than my friend did, and she’s blonde. Just so all you brunettes know you can pull it off too! 🙂

The best dye to use is Manic Panic. Their website is manicpanic.com. They even have little bleaching kits, perfect for dip-dying your tips. I used to bleach and dye my hair a different color every month when I was in high school. (my hair is hot pink and black in my senior picture) I have tried almost every semi-permanent metallic dye and that’s definitely what you see pictured above. The colors look like After Midnight Blue (dark blue), Bad Boy Blue (light blue), Hot Hot Pink (dark pink), and Cotton Candy Pink (light pink), all by M-P. I hope this helps.

Awesome. I used to dye my hair odd colors all the tims (I’m a natural blonde; even Sharpie stays in my hair for three days to a week!) but I gradually stopped doing it (I’m not so big on the upkeep). Now, though, I think I just might do it with light and dark blue-and temporary dye.

  • Tammy

    July 26, 2011 at 8:49 am

this can easily be done with hair extensions. With extensions, you don’t have to worry about changing the natural color of your hair. No bleach, no damage… The extensions come in blonde, brown, and black. And even better…the color is permanent, you don’t have to worry about it fading in a week!

Although, from experience, coloring blonde hair is not as great as you would expect… the color fades way faster than you would think b/c when you bleach darker hair, it kind of damages it, so the color really soaks into the hair, with blonde hair, it isnt damaged, so it doesnt soak in as well…

    …..accept its the complete opposite.
Dark hair levels 6-1 if you bleach you hair it will damage your ends now the color will stick to your hair no mater what because of the bleach you dont even have to bleach it that light it could be copery orange as long as you got your blues and your pinks. use 20v to lighten enough with as little damage as possible

blonde hair levers 7-11..if you are naturaly blonde bleaching the tips of your hair is still a must if you want this to stay at all. you could use 10v because you are already light the only reason for the bleach is to blow open the hair folicle and make it porus[damaged] enough to hold the color.

now as for making the color stay, it has nothing to do with the color of your hair it has every thing to do with maintanance, cold water ONLY, no shampoo on your ends.condotioner does have some detergents in them as well so honestly when i was purple i scrubbed my hair with nothing but conditoioner in cold water and it came out clean and fulffy and vibrant every time :]
thats just my porfesional oppenion,…. i might be a color specialist too lolol:DD

Hey! I LOVE this look, and I’ve really wanted to do it to my hair! I have fairly long hair (a few inches past my shoulders) and it’s medium brown. I have natural ringlet curls as well. Do you guys think it would look alright? I always die my hair (just today, even), so i’m just worried if it will look okay with my ringlets…

All my life, I’ve been jealous of people with dark hair because unnatural color highlights like blue and purple look so damn cool in their hair. Now, that jealousy is receding. I might just have to get these. 😉

I have to warn those who want to dye their darker hair- black looks awesome, but be careful with brown hair. some colors (even when bleached first) tend to look gross. i had a friend who did it and it made her hair just look dirty, or like something got caught in it!

TOOLS: highlighting comb, clips, foils, color brush, hair bleach with the appropriate volume (always seek a professional when using bleach), light pink color, dark pink color, light blue, dark blue, clear gloss.

Step 1 Highlight the tips of the hair using hair bleach with the correct volume. I lightened the bottom 3 inches of Lauren’s hair, taking it as light as possible without causing any damage. As you can see above, I like to “feather” on the bleach. Painting a jagged line makes it blend better.

Step 2 Fold up your foil and let it process until it reaches a pale blonde. Use the appropriate heat if necessary.

Step 3 Shampoo and lightly condition bleach out of the hair.

Step 4 Blow hair completely dry. If it’s still wet, it will soak up less color.

Step 5 Place the hair on a foil. Imagine the bleached out part being split into 3. You’re going to leave the top 1/3 blonde.

Step 6 Next, paint the light blue (or whatever color you choose) on the entire bottom 2/3.

Step 7 Paint the very tips (or bottom 1/3) using the darker version of that color. It should look almost feather like. Be sure to blend. Last, rinse out the color. I highly suggest washing them out one piece at a time and towel drying well so the colors don’t bleed into each other. If they do, you may see a “marbleizing” effect. I love when the colors all swirl together like that, but if you’re looking to keep them more defined, keep them away from each other when they’re wet. I like to finish up by sealing it with a clear gloss. That’s a professional use only product so if you don’t have access to it, you don’t have to do that. Blow dry and…Tah Daaah!!

It’s beautiful….until you have to wash it out. Then it fades and smears your shower with residue. Then you wash it one, maybe two, days later. And it fades again. Then you have faded light grey and light pink color on the tips of your hair.

    Maintaining this look requires either:
    1) Not washing your hair often; or
    2) Protecting JUST the tips of your hair when you wash it; or
3)Re-applying the semi-permanent (yes, this ultra-bright color is NOT permanent) hair color every 2-3 weeks to maintain that bright color.

I REALLY do wish someone would have told me this about semi-permanent hair color (a.k.a. Punky Color, Hot Topic Hair Color, etc.) before I tried this with my hair. 🙁
