RIP Google Reader

There’s a 99.9% chance that you’ve heard the news by now, Google Reader is the latest casualty in the company’s attempt to pare down services. (I’m already scared for Gmail.) I’ve used Google Reader for the past five years and was left wondering what to move on to once it says adios come July 1st, if you read sites on GR you’ve probably been left thinking the same. I’ve decided not to wait until doomsday to make the switch and signed up for Feedly and The Old Reader to see which one I like best. If you’d like to keep up with Design Crush and your favorite sites and you’re currently reading via Google Reader, I’d suggest making the switch to a new RSS service. A few options are Feedly, The Old Reader, Bloglovin, and Reeder. And here’s how to export your feeds. Here’s to the future!

I was totally crushed as well. Google Reader has always been the best feed in my opinion (though granted, I never looked too hard. And now I suppose I’ll actually have to). Will you let us know which one you like the best and which one you end up switching to? I’m sure I’m not the only DC reader who wants to know…

ps- I didn’t even THINK about my beloved gmail til now. I’m terrified!

I was mortified! I currently house 681 subscriptions (although I am due for a cleaning) so I immediately freaked out for half of a second. I am enjoying Feedly thus far but it’s somewhat glitchy and it doesn’t always find the blog’s feeds that I’m trying to add. I hope my import queue from The Old Reader goes through soon!

Felt the same way about GoogleReader!! I was in love with the dang thing. Currently I’m using Feedly and I’m liking it. Especially since I made mine purple. And you can pretty much just automatically transfer everything from Reader right to Feedly in 2 seconds. Really concerned about my gmail as well now haha

thanks for the links to other options 🙂 i currently have my nerds (my Hubby and his 2 friends) trying out options and then reporting back to me. would love to know what you like best too. don’t worry about gmail, reader has been close to teh chopping block before but they won’t get rid of gmail. if horrible google+ wouldn’t have happened, we would still have reader.

I haven’t tried other ones, but I love Bloglovin! I made the step from Google reader to BL a few years ago and never felt the need to go back! it’s so much more “now” that GR…

Right there with you, also trying to figure out what’s going to be next for me. Going to check out Bloglovin too, heard great things about it.

I received the notice that GoogleReader was saying GoodBye and I’ve been in denial. Thank you for sharing transfer options. Instead of clinging onto Reader for dear life until the end, I just uploaded all of my followings over to BlogLovin and Feedly. So far BlogLovin is my favorite, but we shall see. I’ll test both options for a while; I don’t want to put my blogs in one basket right now. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for this important info post! I had absolutely no idea what and how to do about my subscription list. Now I chose the Old Reader and I am waiting for the import (more than 30 000 people wait in line in front of me!).
