All the Wrong People Have Self Esteem.

All the Wrong People Have Self-Esteem: An Inappropriate Book for Young Ladies or, Frankly, Anybody Else is the mouthful-of-a-title of illustrator and author Laurie Rosenwald’s latest book.

It’s geared toward teens (although she’s never raised one) and full of rants, witty observations, anecdotes, handmade collages (of course), photos, flirt cards, fill-in-the-blanks and random games. If I had a teenage daughter she would definitely own a copy of this wisdom-filled bible of adolescent knowledge. In fact, I sort of want to own it myself. I’m sure I could use an update on a few of the chapters covered!

A Year of Mornings.

I’m still lusting after A Year of Mornings: 3191 Miles Apart by Maria Alexandra Vettese (Mav) and Stephanie Congdon Barnes. If you’re not familiar, Mav and Stephanie are friends – not to mention fantastic photographers – who live 3191 miles apart in Portland, Oregon and Portland, Maine. Starting January 1, 2007 each posted a photo every morning. This book is the result. Their next adventure? A Year of Evenings, of course, which will be released this summer.

Book City Jackets.

I think I’d slap a few of these updated schoolbook covers on my favorites of the moment and put them on my coffee table. I love kraft paper so these Book City Jackets are right up my little alley! You can pick up your own set of three for $9.

Judge a book by its cover.

I’m an avid reader and have to admit that, being a designer, I choose at least 50% of my books by their covers. Not only have I discovered some great authors along the way, but some really talented designers as well. If you’re like me you’ll love Jack Cheng’s Judge a book by its cover. You assign a rating of up to 5 stars, click submit, and see how your cover rating compares with Amazon ratings based on reader satisfaction.

Design Matters: Packaging 01.

A few months ago my friend Megan, the lone copywriter at Capsule, hooked me up with the latest book in their Design Matters series. Design Matters: Packaging 01. Design is an increasingly competitive marketplace, one in which you constantly need to be in the “know”. But these days most design books only focus on type, color, and layout. The Design Matters series takes a more strategic approach, allowing designers to learn not only what looks good, but also what sort of design is smart.

Packaging 01 is the latest book in the Design Matters series and focuses on developing, creating and implementing package designs. The book is full of beautiful, intelligent examples, so readers can understand the points being highlighted along the way. Their goal? That by the last page you walk away with a better understanding of packaging, the process of creating it, and how it influences our world.

Mission accomplished.

{Thanks Megan!}

OKC Dinner and/or Book Club.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how I want to meet more people and become involved in a few more activities. But I want it to be low-key things, and definitely things that I’m actually interested in.

And that’s where the idea of a Dinner and/or Book Club came from. I honestly don’t know how many Design Crush readers are from the OKC area, but of those of you who are is anyone interested in joining a small group that meets once a month to make an awesome meal or discuss a certain book? It could easily be two separate groups or maybe both combined into one evening. Drop me an email at designcrushing@gmail.com if you’re interested!
