Color Stories: Bright Poppy Red

hi there! this is Alyson from Unruly Things, happily filling in while Kelly is off in Milan. like Kelly, I’m also a graphic designer and a huge fan of color. lately, I’ve been curating a color series on my blog. I asked Kelly what her favorite color was so I could share one of my Color Stories with you today. she said bright poppy red, one of my faves too, so here are a few things I’m loving in different tones of poppy red.

one : washed twill tee / two : red two-tone & plaid necktie / three : minsk clogs / four : cael necklace / five : scotch naturals polish / six : little hell esb / seven : leather bag / eight : linen dish towel / nine : mt. rainer sport socks

Galactic Garb

Hi, Design Crush readers! I’m Jessie from Style & Pepper and I’m happy to be the mouse that’s come to play while my kitten Kelly is away. Thanks for indulging me while I share a little bit of fall fashion with you in her absence. I wanted to keep design at the forefront of my guest post, so I picked a recent pin of mine that has made me feel particularly inspired, and sort of went with my gut from there. Enjoy, and feel free to pop over to visit me anytime!

Starry skies have been twinkling their way onto the style scene recently, and as a nature lover who also happens to be a full-blown addict of all things glittery, I think that it’s a complete match made in heaven. First I fell in love with the astronomical art, and then the dreamy dress followed closely behind… Naturally, my next move (being the good little style blogger that I am) was so see what shoppable goodies I could find that would go along with the aesthetic, and I was happy to discover that the results are out-of-this-world.

Turntable Kitchen’s Fall Recipe Roundup

When Kelly asked me to contribute a post to her fabulous blog, I immediately knew I wanted to share a few of my favorite Fall-themed recipes with her readers. I fall harder and harder in love with this season every year; there’s just something so romantic about it. The boots and scarves, the rich colors, the crisp air.

I live in San Francisco, so, sadly, our temperatures and leaves don’t change quite as dramatically as they do in some other parts of the country, but I find that cooking in the Fall is my way of ushering in a new chapter. I line my kitchen counter with heirloom squashes, stock up on my favorite grains and legumes, and change up my tea towels.

Today I’m sharing a few seasonal recipes from Turntable Kitchen, the food and music site and subscription service that I run with my husband. The pancakes are a fantastic start to your cool mornings, while the soup and tacos are delicious vegetarian mains or side dishes. And if you’re already on the hunt for Thanksgiving recipes, I think you’ll enjoy this refreshing take on roasted squash.

1. Whole Wheat Almond-Poppy Seed Pancakes
2. Chanterelle Tacos
3. Roasted Squash with Mint, Pepitas and Balsamic
4. Lentil and Turnip Soup with Pounded Walnuts

From Here to There

I’m off to Italy for Design Lab a week from today! International travel always feels way different than domestic to me. Of course there’s the extended time in the air and the time change to contend with. But for me it’s always a matter of what to do while in-flight. My usual go-tos are reading, writing, and attempting to catch a few Zs. There’s also the small matter of making sure all of my immediate necessities are within arms reach, I never pack anything I can’t go without for at least 12 hours after arrival (blame that on one too many lost bags). Throw in a tote to carry it all and we’re airborne!

October DIYs

As the holidays edge ever closer, the DIY gods smile down upon us ever often. Or such is the case so far this month. There have been more creative DIYs than I can keep track of, but these ten have stuck in my mind. Have you seen any great projects lately?

Time to Get Outdoorsy

It’s that time of year when I’ve got camping on the brain! (Even though I’ve camped approximately 2.5 times in my life. And all before the age of 13. But that’s neither here nor there.) You know what they say about a great adventure, half the fun is getting there. Well in this case, half the fun is in the stuff you take there with you. Not exactly glamping, but pretty damn close.

The Occa Maison Marine Lantern for some after dark ambiance. A Brass Stowaway Capsule to keep matches dry and you headed in the right direction. Several Banquinho Stools for gathering around the campfire. Some DIY hand-painted mugs for everyone to take home after the trip as a memento. An enamel long handled warmer for heating hot chocolate and hot toddies. And of course some stylish Marshmallow Twig Roasters for s’mores. (Duh.) Last but not least, lots of cozy Pendleton camp blankets to keep the chill out.

Yummus Hummus

It’s like I’m giving ideas away here, Yummus Hummus would be the perfect name for a hummus-only cafe! But back to the task at hand. Hummus, don’t you love it? I’m not a big fan of the chickpea on its own, but blend it up with some spices and whatnot and I’m all over it. I have yet to make my own hummus, but these are the recipes I’ve got bookmarked for when the time comes. As always, click on the image to go to the recipe and source.

Call Me, Maybe

I’m sorry, I had to. That song is too damn catchy for its own good (but you already know that). I’m not getting a new iPhone 5 just yet, but I am in the market for a fresh look for fall and winter. Really feeling the leather backed one, lower right.
