Design Crush 3.0

Welcome to the latest incarnation of Design Crush!

Once again I had the pleasure of working with Cooper Multimedia during the three month process of giving the site a facelift. Tim and Erin are a dream and really helped me with making my vision a reality. When we started in July I thought I knew exactly how I wanted things to look, but it’s funny how they translate once they’re on screen versus a piece of paper. That’s something I will never get used to as a designer. But between the three of us we made it here and I am very, very happy.

Some new features:
• A press page! Still a work in progress and completely surreal to compile.
• Simplified horizontal navigation at the top of the page. (The rollovers are one of my favorite parts!)
• A new social media icon link to me on Pinterest.

Time to Swap 2012 Calendars!

It’s time to kickoff the 3rd Annual Design Crush/Greedy Girl Calendar Swap! I’ll be posting some calendar roundups through the end of the month to give you some of the best of the best, and Caroline will be sharing some too. We hope you’ll join in on the awesome!

Here’s what you need to know:

By October 29th (that’s a Saturday), email calendarswap@gmail.com and tell us the following:
… your name
… your email address
… the name of your blog and, also, the name of your favorite blog
… your snail-mail address
… whether you prefer an international or in country swapmate – or does it matter?
… are you interested in sending (and receiving) more than one calendar (from different swappers)? If so, how many?

We’ll pair you up and send your swapmate’s details on or around November 2nd.
You MUST have your calendar sent by November 23rd (that’s the day before US Thanksgiving).

Here are some things to keep in mind:

VALUE. Keep your calendar between $20 and $30. And, since there are some perfectly lovely and super-affordable calendars out there, you might try throwing in a few small goodies if the calendar’s value doesn’t quite add up. Also, handmade is great — just remember the suggested value.

SHIPPING. If you choose to have an international swapmate, don’t forget it will cost you a little bit more (a few dollars, maybe) to ship your calendar.

CONSIDERATION. Check out your swapmate’s website or blog, or consider getting to know his or her tastes via e-mail, to get an idea of what he or she might like.

TIMELINESS. Please, please, please send your calendar on time.

THE FINE PRINT. This is the part we hate to have to mention, but it has to be said. Though it’s rare and has definitely gotten better over the years, it never fails that at least one super swapmate sent out the most amazing calendar and received nothing in return. And that pisses us off. If you’ve dropped the ball in the past, we know who you are and we’ll be watching for you. You’re on a list. A black list.

Oink

Possibly the best take on a piggy bank I’ve ever seen, Oink reimagines the classic with two large slots for nostrils and corked plugs for ears. The slots make depositing your earnings a breeze, while the corks let you remove your hard earned cash without breaking the bank (pun intended). (via Design Milk)

State Fair Magnets

I’m sort of completely into animal figurines lately, I trolled the dollar bins are Target for weeks looking for some to spray paint gold. I love these state fair magnets, they’d look completely unobtrusive on my white fridge. You know, for farm animal busts.

For Will, For Kate

PHOTO: Kate Miss

If you’ve been following For Me, For You these past few weeks you already know that Kate Miss’s boyfriend, Will, has been diagnosed with testicular cancer. Will has been unable to work since having a tumor removed and has no medical insurance. You can imagine the mountain of debt the surgery, tests, and appointments have put these two under, and now to make things just a little more difficult they’ve had trouble securing funding for his upcoming chemo treatments. As someone who hasn’t had health insurance for more years than I care to admit, this is my own personal nightmare.

While the duo are refusing cash donations, Kate has set up an Etsy shop full of her and Will’s work – they’re both completely gifted creatives – that will benefit their current situation. So if you want to help one of the sweetest couples I know (on the internet), please consider visiting the shop and purchasing a super affordable piece of art. Will, Kate, and I will all thank you for it.

Think Different

I’d be remiss not to pay homage to the loss of such a visionary. Steve Jobs was sick, that we all knew. I think what we didn’t know was how much he impacted our lives. He made my career as a graphic designer possible, and my role as a blogger easier. His inventions allow me to communicate more readily with my friends and family, and share photos and work instantly without a second thought. Without Steve Jobs my love of music might not be as big a part of my life as it is, because it’s so readily available. Without his innovative, forward-thinking ingenuity my life as I know it would cease to exist. And to think, he was really only getting started.

Autumnal Libations

The arrival of fall makes me want to drink in a completely different way than summer, it’s a fact. Summer’s cocktails are all about patios and feeling refreshed and bathing suits. Fall’s cocktails are more along the lines of comfort, relief, and battening down the hatches for winter’s arrival. Here are a few that should help ease you into shorter days and longer nights. Click on the image to be taken to the cocktail recipe source.
