On the Rocks: Lemonade Caipirinhas.

I’ve been craving citrus everything lately. (Isn’t that a sign of scurvy??) What better way to get your daily dose than with these Lemonade Caipirinhas? Exactly… there isn’t one.

Ingredients:
– 2 large limes, cut into 16 wedges each
– ½ cup sugar
– 2 cups cachaca [Brazilian brandy made from sugar cane]
– 6 cups crushed ice
– 1 cup store-bought lemonade
– Lemon slices, optional for garnish
– Lime slices, optional for garnish

Using a muddler, crush lime wedges and sugar in a large glass measuring cup until juices are released; pour in cachaca. Transfer cachaca mixture to a large pitcher and fill with ice. Stir in lemonade. Serve in glasses garnished with lemon and lime slices, makes 4 to 6 cocktails.

The Daily Eat: Cream Scones.

Since it’s an extremely short week on my part, I’ve decided not to dedicate this week to any particular ingredient. Instead I thought I’d pick a few miscellaneous recipes that don’t really match up to anything else I have tucked away in my food files.

I’ve only ever had the luxury of eating homemade scones once. I love the simplicity of these cream scones– they’d be tasty paired with anything an everything you could put on them.

Back in Action.

10 Things I’ve Learned in the Past 4 Days:

1. Painting is hard work.
Especially six rooms of painting in two days time. My arms literally felt like they could be in slings, so I’m clearly not cut out for daily manual labor. Needless to say, I harbor a newfound respect for people who paint for a living.

2. People leave one thing when they move out of a house: DIRT.
Really gross dirt. Cabinet dirt. Floor dirt. And the worst of all: toilet dirt. *gag*

3. I have a lot of stuff.
A. Lot. Of. Stuff. That I can’t wait to go through and purge. Some will end up in the trash, but most will go to Goodwill. I’m happy to say that everyone who helped me paint my little heart out this weekend did not leave empty handed!!

4. I hate tearing down cardboard boxes even more than making them.
Seriously – what a pain! Can’t they just magically disappear now that they’ve served their purpose?

5. Cats do not enjoy moving
Upon arrival at the new house they spent copious amounts of time under my bed. And in the bathroom and kitchen cabinets. Of course the first night they decided to become curious and roam around making all sorts of noise. Damn nocturnal critters!

6. I can only stand to eat fast food about once every two months.
No time, of course, to prep actual meals – you need a kitchen full of pots, pans and utensils to do that – so fast food it is. And even when I opt for the salad I still felt like crap. Can’t wait to hit up the grocery store tonight to stock up!

7. The kitchen is my favorite room.
I have more cabinet space than I could have ever hoped for. A refrigerator with an ice maker – which seems small, but is a huge deal to me. And a great triangle set-up between the fridge, stove and sink. Love it!

8. The garbage men are going to work for their paycheck this week.
Between the last owner’s trash and my ‘Moving In Trash’ it’s going to be quite the haul of crap. (And that’s not even counting all those boxes I haven’t cut down yet!)

9. I really, really like my new home.
And I hope that feeling lasts for at least a few years, because I never want to pack again!!!

10. You guys are freakin’ awesome!
Seriously. Thank you so much for and the congratulatory words and wishes. You are my favorite part of this blog.

Happy Weekend.

I’m heading out early today because I get the keys to my house! Which means that Painting and Moving In can commence starting this afternoon. Woohoo! I’ll be taking Monday and Tuesday off to get a few things settled and some unpacking done. See you Wednesday!

This Weekend:
• paint, paint, and paint some more
• finish packing
• have refrigerator delivered and installed
• have two ceiling fans and one light fixture installed
• MOVE!
• unpack all those boxes that I’ve been so busy packing…
• collapse from exhaustion

Happy Weekend!

The Daily Eat: Fresh Cherry Tart.

Tarts are fantastic for many a reason – the first and most important being that they’re usually pretty easy to concoct. The second is that tart pans are so fun with their crimped edges (but that’s besides the point). The combination of all the different textures and flavors in this Fresh Cherry Tart looks incredible!

Glass Straws.

I love the idea of these glass drinking straws. But I sort of can’t help but think that glass pipettes – you know, the kind you used in chemistry class – would work just as well for a fraction of the price.

Who Won? Vinyl Wall Art Owl Decal.

The winning comment for
Win It: Vinyl Wall Art is from…

narnia’s comment read:
“So cute! I would put it above my kitschy bookcase in a little nook in the living room.”

Congrats narnia! You were selected via the Random Number Generator. Send me an email with your full name and address and the rest will be history. Thank you to everyone who entered for a chance to win! I loved reading all of your stories and picturing your homes. And an equally ginormous thanks to Holly at Vinyl Wall Art for sponsoring the contest.

The Daily Eat: Gâteau Basque.

A gâteau basque sounds extremely foreign (which is is) and complicated (which it isn’t). Gâteau basque is simply a thin pastry filled with preserved fruit and pastry cream. Check out this version with cherry preserves. *Drool.*

Big Smile. Big Thanks.

If I could smile and show this many teeth right now (and not look like I wanted to eat you) I would. Thank you so, so much for all of your congratulations and good wishes! It really does mean the world to me.

Natsko Seki.

Artist Natsko Seki is a bit of a jack of all trades, dabbling in illustration, animation and graphic design. While all of her work knocks my socks off, her illustrations are what really blow me away. I love the bold color choices and collage-like feeling she lends to every piece.
