Why We Rescue

Rescue pets are just the best, and I say so from personal experience. All five of my pets – three cats and two dogs – are rescues. One from a farm in Arkansas, one from a sealed crate in a parking lot, one from an acquaintance who was fostering a stray, one from the shelter, and one from the aftermath of last May’s tornadoes here in Oklahoma.

Theron Humphrey ( of Maddie the Coonhound fame) partnered up with Purina One on a year-long documentary series entitled Why We Rescue to tell the stories of how shelter pets make our lives better. He hit all fifty states with the goal of sharing just how amazing, devoted, and happy shelter pets are and why you should consider adopting one the next time you’re looking for a furry companion. Three out of four people looking to adopt a pet don’t even consider it an option, and perceptions need drastically changed. The Made-Up Words Project

Completely brilliant and oh so fun, The Made-Up Words Project is the brainchild of illustrator Rinee Shah. The goal is to collect and catalog made-up words used among friends and family. I can completely vouch for the above growing up in western Pennsylvania, except that we pronounced it guh-chies instead of goh-chies!

31 Winter Walks

I love the idea of a group of objects representing a singular event or moment in time. Matt Jensen’s 31 Winter Walks is a collection of photographs, each one showing the physical result of the experience through groupings of sticks and ephemera found along the way of each excursion.

Rebecca Atwood + Calypso

I have a mega design crush on Brooklyn-based artist Rebecca Atwood, and if possible it just got bigger. Her use of traditional textile techniques and hand painting makes my heart go pitter patter and both are on full display in the new Rebecca Atwood and Calypso St. Barth collaboration. Four unique designs with reversible details are now available online and in stores. The white canvas, subtle metallics, and soft sea greens and blues will bright up your winter and still feel fresh and vibrant when summer rolls around! 365 Quotes

If you follow Design Crush on Instagram – @designcrush – you’ve probably noticed a handwritten quote popping up every day since January 1st. I started writing down my favorite words in a journal sometime in the late 90s, so when I was brainstorming ideas for my first full-fledged 365 project last December it was the natural choice. If you’d like to follow along and maybe find a little inspiration in the process please do!

Hope Bird

The Hope Bird collection is a limited edition collaboration between designer Jaime Hayon and Design-Apart. Each one of the fifteen cheeky ceramic birds is absolutely identical in shape and size, but hand-painted in a unique design using gold and black. The entire collection is a representation of hope and an optimistic future.
