All Things Coffee

Maybe you’ve noticed the days getting shorter, or your kiddos are headed back to the classroom, or you just really love the stuff *raises hand*. It doesn’t feel like a day has truly begun until I’ve had a big mug of coffee. During the week I’m usually in a rush to get started working so I stick to standard drip in my Cuisinart, but when I have more time on the weekend to make coffee a ritual I opt for my french press or Chemex. I’m curious – how do you make yours?

Keep On Wearing White

Wearing-White-1-Design-Crush
White Drifter Midi Skirt

It’s hard to believe that Labor Day is only a few short weeks away, and with it the unofficial end of summer. Whatever you do don’t put away those warm weather whites until next year, rather transition them into fall with the rest of your wardrobe. Layer lighter pieces with a jean or moto jacket, maybe put on a pair of tights and boots, or even layer something with sleeves under something without. (It’s also an opportune time to troll your favorite sites for sales on all things summer!)

Let’s Talk Stairs

Art and Chic-Design Crush
Art and Chic

Let’s call staircases what they really are: a functional sculpture. If you live in a multistory home you’re lucky enough to have your very own. And while you might be thinking my staircase is definitely not a piece of art, there are plenty of ways to turn that on its head. Grab a can of paint – the most budget-friendly way to change most parts of your space – or lay down a rug for starters. Check out these ten traditional and modern flights for a dose of inspiration.

Snapbacks Are Where It’s At

Snapbacks-1-Design-Crush
Katin K Man Patch Snapback Hat

I’ve never been much of a hat girl, though I have plenty of aspirations. Last year I finally began to embrace cool weather loving wide brimmed hats so who knows, maybe snapbacks are next? Of course this style has been around for ages in sports, but lately I’m noticing more and more designs with a nod towards fashion.

Tips + Tricks: Food Styling and Photography

Apt 34-Design Crush
Apt. 34

I’m endlessly fascinated by food styling and photography because when it’s executed in an interesting way, well, it just doesn’t get any better. Time and time again I find I’m drawn to a certain style of the art that’s equal parts delicious and creative – I definitely want to jump into the photo and devour whatever’s on display but I’m also deconstructing just what makes it so beautiful.

Check out these tips and tricks whether you’re looking to amp up your Instagram lunch shots, an aspiring food blogger, or just love amateur photography.

  1. Play with light and shadow
  2. Experiment with interesting cropping
  3. Take direct overhead photos
  4. Play with action shots
  5. Show off the messy aftermath
  6. Display deconstructed ingredients
  7. Showcase the monochromatic

Backpacks + Rucksacks

Backpacks-1-Design-Crush
The Roll Top Backpack

It’s the first day of August, can you believe it? Almost time for back-to-school, football season, bonfires, and more of my favorite things, many of which require toting around a heavier load than my small saddlebag purse can accommodate. My go-to is a striped chambray backpack that I scored on sale last fall, it’s versatile enough to carry along on a hike or use as a weekend bag. Check out these thirteen backpacks that are both modern and functional.
