Michael Afsa

Michael Afsa lies somewhere between designer and visual artist, and he describes his beautiful sheet metal sculptures as “abstracted flora and imaginary landscapes, inspired by the desert environment, folk craft, and architectural forms.” I describe them as worlds unto themselves that I want to crawl inside of and explore.

The Fortynine Studio

So much good stuff comes out of Australia! The Fortynine Studio is a creative collective based in Sydney with a plethora of talent. The group – Lauren Austin, Ben Elbourne, Carly Vickers, Sarah Spackman, and Harriett Watts – has a variety of backgrounds and talents to contribute. Check out their lighting, textiles, and paper. But what really truly caught my eye was their line of ceramic tableware.

Tina Frey Designs

One of my favorite makers carried in Design Crush: The Marketplace is Tina Frey Designs. What at first appears to be glass is actually cast resin from Tina’s hand-sculpted pieces that she makes in San Francisco. The forms of her work are inspired by organic forms found in nature as well as objects found in worldwide travels, while the colors come from translucent popsicles, candies, and jellybeans. No wonder each piece looks so delicious!

Katharine Morling

Katharine Morling‘s ceramic pieces feel like a combination of childhood dreams come to life and sketchbook drawings. In other words, perfectly lovely and quirky. The UK-based artist has been at it since 2003, creating pieces that are open to interpretation and invite curiosity and questions.
