Sometimes pattern-free is just the way to be!
Chilean artist Serena Garcia Dalla Venezia creates stunning textile art from small handmade fabric balls that she then groups together. Growth and accumulation, order and chaos are the driving inspiration behind her work. The effect is somewhat pixelated in the end, full of thoughtful gradations in color and contrast.
I’m never sure why there isn’t more amazing textile-focused jewelry out there. Marta, the Spanish maker behind Lana Pelana, is fascinated with the possibilities behind embroidery. It takes her several days to finish each hand-stitched piece, the end result a small “crafted amulet” that’s a treasure to wear.
OYYO makes some amazing dhurries, handwoven by a community of craftspeople in India and each made of 100% organic cotton and vivid vegetable dyes derived from local plants. They also put together a beautiful lookbook that makes me want their rugs on my floors that much more, even if I don’t live near sand.

Graphic black + white rugs are some of my favorite floor coverings.
Modern heirloom quilts are a beautiful thing. I love that such an age old tradition has been taken by the reins and flipped on its head to create something fresh that stays true to technique. These quilts by Lindsay Stead fit the bill exactly with their geometric designs and thoughtful color palettes. Each time consuming quilt is handmade in her Toronto studio as what can only be described as a time-intensive labor of love. Make one of Lindsay’s quilts or pillows (equally lovely) your own by visiting her shop.

Sally Hewett creates these very minimal, very NSFW embroidered textile pieces of male and female erogenous zones that I’m openly enamored with. In the hands of another artist this type of project could easily go awry, but Sally manages to give it a sweet and charming undertone that doesn’t go unnoticed.
Self-taught, self-described quilter extraordinaire Jenna Valoe creates textiles with the hope of helping people celebrate their homes and the lives they live in them at her shop Rain & the River. She’s inspired by other cultures, the city of Milwaukee that surrounds her, and the ways color and shapes blend together. Jenna’s work itself is primarily improvisational, which I find ballsy and bold! I love her modern take on such an heirloom quality craft.
