Sigrid Calon Memory Game

Sigrid Calon Memory Game-1-Design Crush

I grew up as an only child activities that I could do on my own were kind of a staple, and memory games were one of those things for sure. I’ve added this grownup, graphic take on the classic featuring fluorescent, Risograph print-inspired patterns by Sigrid Calon to my game collection at home. The cube holds 52 paired cards and works as a design-savvy gift, mental challenge, and beautiful art object.

Madrid-based Daniel Entonado is a painter, yes. But he’s also a painter who deconstructs some of his pieces and puts them back together as collages! The result is brilliantly beautiful and inventive.

Kate Hush

Kate Hush-1-Design Crush

I have a huge crush on neon artist Kate Hush. (That name!) During the day she fabricates neon lighting for others, but when the sun goes down she creates her own art – crazy women doing bad things inspired by men’s rights activists and their ideas of females. Conniving, manipulative forms sporting fake tears and ultra high heels showcase their wicked ways, leading you down the wrong path that might just feel right.

Designer Fund / Moniker

I’m happy to start sharing more graphic design projects here on Design Crush, if you’ve been following us since the beginning in 2007 you know it used to be a big part of our content. Today it’s something I haven’t been able to stop thinking about – a job for Designer Fund by Moniker. Designer Fund is an investment group committed to design-led companies who needed a set of posters for their Bridge Speaker Series that invites legends such as John Bielenberg, Wilson Miner, and Julie Zhuo to speak on a range of topics from design leadership to future design trends. To contrast the digital nature of the talks, Moniker utilized the tactility of paper and created abstract forms to convey key ideas from each lecture.

Laura Jane Scott

Laura Jane Scott-1-Design Crush

I’m loving the experimental art of southeast London-based Laura Jane Scott. In her pieces you’ll find an investigation of form, balance, and space. All of the shapes used in her work are derived from a four by four square grid, each piece an exploration of the combinations and compositions that can be created within self-imposed parameters.

Tips + Tricks: Food Styling and Photography

Apt 34-Design Crush
Apt. 34

I’m endlessly fascinated by food styling and photography because when it’s executed in an interesting way, well, it just doesn’t get any better. Time and time again I find I’m drawn to a certain style of the art that’s equal parts delicious and creative – I definitely want to jump into the photo and devour whatever’s on display but I’m also deconstructing just what makes it so beautiful.

Check out these tips and tricks whether you’re looking to amp up your Instagram lunch shots, an aspiring food blogger, or just love amateur photography.

  1. Play with light and shadow
  2. Experiment with interesting cropping
  3. Take direct overhead photos
  4. Play with action shots
  5. Show off the messy aftermath
  6. Display deconstructed ingredients
  7. Showcase the monochromatic
