Rose Wong

Rose Wong-1-Design Crush

Brooklyn-based illustrator Rose Wong‘s speciality is plant life, and I must say that admiring each piece lowers my blood pressure significantly. I love the way each simply shaped leaf takes life with the cool hued acrylics Rose paints onto each one, making the white space pop all the more.

The Dreslyn Tarot Deck + Guidebook

The Dreslyn Tarot Deck-1-Design Crush

Hi, I’m the girl who took a deck of tarot cards to church camp and was promptly reprimanded by my counselor. That is to say I’ve always been intrigued by a wide range of belief systems and not one to believe something just because someone says to.

The Dreslyn Tarot Deck and Guidebook sets are the collaborative efforts of The Dreslyn and Kati Forner, who took what is almost always ornate in design and pared it down to a stunning minimalistic look. Each includes all 78 traditional symbols as well as a concise guide book, allowing a novice or advanced reader to interpret the suits, symbols, and card meanings. Choose from the Rose Gold Edition or the Silver Edition.

Bodil Jane

Bodil Jane-1-Design Crush

From the looks of Bodil Jane‘s portfolio nothing is outside the illustrator’s wheelhouse. Food, recipes, animals, fashion, interiors, plants, packages, and maps are among the things you’ll find vibrating with color, personality, and life as you flip through. (But the zoo might be my favorite!)

Ugo Rondinone / Seven Magic Mountains

Ugo Rondinone-1-Design Crush

Las Vegas isn’t one of my favorite places (sorry, Nevada), but I’d gladly make a trip west to see Ugo Rondinone‘s Seven Magic Mountains public art piece with my own eyes. The Swiss artist’s installation sits just south of Vegas smack in the middle of the desert, each of the seven towers of locally-sourced limestone masses standing between 30 and 35 feet tall. The neon painted columns appear either lined up in a row or clustered together depending on where you’re standing. The monumental piece of land art will be on view for two years as of May 2016.

Abeego

Abeego-1-Design Crush

I reuse plastic food storage bags more than once, and admittedly sometimes plastic wrap as well. Since recently discovering Abeego I might not have to for much longer though. Abeego is a reusable beeswax-coated wrap that protects food and lets it breathe just like a lemon peel, onion skin, or cheese rind. The result is naturally fresher food. Each wrap is washable and will last up to a year when properly cared for.

Benoit Paillé / Surreal Mexico

Benoit Paillé-1-Design Crush

I’ve yet to travel to Mexico, but Benoit Paillé‘s Surreal Mexico series captures what it looks like in my mind’s eye. Hot, sultry, and a little dirty around the edges. These photographs aren’t set up, rather they’re spontaneous and use a flash and color gels to get the effects seen. Surreal pictures without extensive retouching and digital manipulation is a real treat these days!

Backyard Spaces

City Farmhouse-Design Crush
City Farmhouse

Aside from the guest room and a planned flower garden for the front of the house, the actual yard part of the backyard is all that’s left to take care of at my house. I’m forever futzing and rearranging but those are the only larger projects, and I think I’ve been delaying them for just that reason. I’ve taken care of the decks but I want the entire backyard to feel like an extension of living space. These spaces have accomplished that in spades and are full of inspiration!

Courtney Mattison / Our Changing Seas Series

Courtney Mattison-1-Design Crush

Courtney Mattison creates amazing large-scale sculptural installations, the most impressive of which is a series of three called Our Changing Seas. The first is based on interviews conducted with marine researchers, artists, and marine environmental professionals, the second depicts a 360º transition of a healthy coral reef to a bleached one and back again, and the third explores the rapid transition corals in the tropics and subtropics are making as a result of climate change.
