Day to Dinner to Party!

While we were in the final throes of the HP Designer Matchup last week, I started thinking about other important stuff. Namely how best not to embarrass myself at New York Fashion Week. I’m a graphic designer and blogger who works out of a home office. Sure I like to think I can clean up well enough when out in public, but how could I make it better? And more important still – easier.

That’s when I got in touch with Engage OKC and they put me in cahoots with The Makeup Bar. I was familiar with the boutique and its owner, Alex Mendez-Kelley, but hadn’t ever used any services. After talking a little about what I was looking for we decided on a three part look than can be built upon in stages. Brilliant!

During the day I’m drawn towards a natural look, and I wanted to keep it that way. So what we worked on was a polished look that could be used as a base-builder for something more dramatic later on.

First, Shelly primed my face and my eyelids. The Makeup Bar has their own line called MUB Beauty, and one of their best products is Sha-liner. A one-step base/eye shadow/eye liner that’s crease-proof, smudge-proof, and tear-proof. For the Day look No Brainer was used, it’s a flat nude color. My top lids were then lined with the Sha-liner in Mindless and a nice little wing was added to the outside corners. Alex also engineered a brilliant dual-ended brush, one for using the Sha-liner as shadow the other for liner. (Even this clumsy girl can use it! The key is short strokes.) My eyes were topped off with a few coats of mascara and done.

Next, any and all blemishes were concealed and foundation evened out my skin. (I normally do these steps first thing, but the ladies swear by this order saying it’s easier to correct any mistakes.) A shade lighter than my skin was used under my eyes to lighten and brighten. A bronzer was used to contour my cheeks and introduce some warm tones, then blush was added for a pop of color and to cool things down. (Fun fact, our skin is comprised of both warm and cool tones, so you need to wear a little of both to appear neutral.)

To finish up, Shelly lined my lips in MUB Beauty‘s Heather which a neutral mauve-ish lip tone and glossed me over with a similar color.

Now it’s time to kick things up a notch from where we were to head off for dinner! Most seasons makeup trends are focused on either a bold eye or bold lip. This year, for the first time in ages, both looks being worn at once are showing up on the runways.

Adding to the Day look, Shelly added another Sha-liner called Moondance (a pretty beigey-grey) to the middle of my eyelids and followed up with some powder shadow in the crease for some depth. A little bit of cream blush was added to my cheeks for more color and my lips were darkened with Berrylicious gloss from MUB Beauty that I instantly fell in love with.

Now it’s on to party time! Sparkles and color are where it’s at.

Shelly used Sha-liner in Shalicious to highlight my brow bone and the inner corners of my eyes. She then used a super-secret MUB Beauty highlighting product that’s not available to the public yet, so I don’t even have any information to share on it! Another pop of cream blush on just the apples of my cheeks was added and the underside of my top lashes were lined for extra oomph. My bottom lids were lined with Sha-liner in Spring Break, a killer teal that I can’t get enough of. A dusting of sparkles on my bowline and I’m ready to hit the NYFW party scene!

This Thursday, September 6th is the annual event Fashion’s Night Out. If you’re in the OKC area and interested in seeing what The Makeup Bar can do for you that’s the night! Why, you ask? Because Alex has gathered the best of the best makeup artists to do FREE makeovers! That’s right, people who I could never ever afford to do my makeup are going to do yours for nada. Head over to have them gussy you up send you out for a fabulous evening!

August

It seems like I blinked and August was in my rearview mirror. For real, it seems like I can barely remember much of it outside of foster dogs and lots of mornings spent on the patio with Pete.

Clockwise from top left:
Celebrated this girl’s 13th birthday – I have a teenager!
Received a most epic bruise breaking up a dog scuffle. (Anyone else see the skull face? Okay.)
Made this White Peach Cardamom Crumble. So good.
Started fostering a chiweenie. Named Hot Dog.
Helped Rusty find a home! (Miss him sooo much.)
Bit the inevitable bullet and adopted Bebe as my own.

HP Designer Matchup – Week 3

Say hello to Week 3 of the HP Designer Matchup, only one week left until the final piece is revealed! Last week you voted on the design of the necklace Sarah of Cursive Design is creating for New York Fashion Week, and the landslide winner was Collar Ornate!

Over the weekend Sarah worked on mocking up the piece to see if the weight felt right to wear, she also got together the vintage glass pieces and sent them off to be cast. And then there’s the dyed silk pieces which are in testing to make sure the colors are absolutely perfect. Guys, there is a LOT that goes into creating a piece of jewelry!

Sarah decided that the more functionality this necklace has, the better. (I happen to agree!) So one side will feature leather and the other silk. Here are a few sketches she whipped up using Adobe Photoshop CS6 and the HP TouchSmart. I’m so in love with where this collaboration is headed.

There’s only one reader participation poll left, this week you’re choosing what we’ll name the necklace! The poll will be open until Thursday, August 30, 2012 at midnight CST. Stay tuned next week for the big reveal!!

Disclaimer: HP provided both me and Sarah with a TouchSmart PC and Adobe provided Photoshop CS6 for use. All participants will receive a trip to New York Fashion Week. All content and opinions are mine.

New Addition

A baby in the form of a pup named Bebe. She started off as my foster dog six weeks ago and I knew I’d be keeping her almost from the start (as did my Instagram followers who nicknamed my feed Bebe-cam!).

I picked Bebe up at the animal welfare shelter as a terrified stray who had been brought in. She was so scared, in fact, that I had to physically carry her to my car because she wouldn’t walk. For the next few days she was glued to my side and her little body shook every time she exhaled. Lots of time was clocked with her sitting in one place staring at the wall. But little by little her personality came through, and my-oh-my what a little firecracker! We believe she’s a Yorkie/Cairn Terrier (ALSO SEE: Toto) mix, but can’t be sure. What we do know is that she’s roughly a year to year and a half old and tips the scales at 8.9 lbs. Some small dog syndrome definitely comes with this tiny package as Piper can attest to. They’re still getting used to being sisters with the occasional dog fight, but time should take care of that.

I think I’m now maxed out with my animal menagerie, two cats and two dogs seems like a good combination and the right place to stop. Of course I’ll still be fostering dogs, just not adding to the permanent residents. And PS: Rusty is still up for adoption!!

HP Designer Matchup – Week 2

We’re one week into the HP Designer Matchup and it’s getting more exciting by the day! Last week you voted on adjectives that would influence Sarah Fox of Cursive Design as she brainstormed ideas for the necklace we’re creating to reveal at New York Fashion Week next month. The top three chosen words were geometric, edgy, and colorful (good choices if I say so myself!). Sarah used hand sketches, Adobe Photoshop CS6, the HP TouchSmart, and mad skills to come up with these four final design options! (Psst… pay close attention because you’ll be voting on your favorite. Poll closes Friday, August 24, 2012 at midnight CST.)

Here’s what Sarah had to add about her design process:
I do quite a bit of sketching while I design. For me, it’s an exercise in thinking and brainstorming more than a technical sketch. Right now, I’m determining the color pallete and shape(s). It’s shaping up to be a collar and, bonus: it will be reversible! A colorful silk print on one side and leather on the back.

HP Designer Matchup Challenge

Any chance you remember the HP/Project Runway Challenge I was a part of last summer? I hope so, because this year’s HP Designer Matchup Challenge is going to blow it out of the water. Why? (I’m glad you asked.) Because not only do I get to partner with one of my very favorite jewelry designers – Sarah Fox of Cursive Design – but I also get to involve YOU. That’s right, Sarah and I will be involving you in decisions from the direction of the jewelry piece she’ll be creating to reveal at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) right down to its name. Fun, right?

So, have you met Sarah? She began Cursive Design back in 2007 in her Chicago studio. All of her pieces are inspired by color, juxtaposition of materials, and moments found in nature. (Her North Dakota upbringing has a bit to do with that last part, I’d be willing to venture.) Sarah’s work is always unpredictable and balanced, and always growing by leaps and bounds. Earlier in the year Cursive even had a line at Anthropologie, each piece of which was made by hand just like everything Cursive sells. Quality is obviously key. Secret Bonus: It’s always been one of Sarah’s dreams to have her work at Fashion Week.

Over the next few weeks the two of us will be collaborating on the creation of a necklace that will be revealed during NYFW in September! We’ll be using the latest HP Touchsmart PC and Adobe Photoshop CS6 to sketch our options and move through the process, and of course you’ll get peeks here and there of where we’re at in the mix of things. The end result will be a necklace that Sarah creates from the drawings, and which will *hopefully* be available to you for purchase sometime in the near future.

Your involvement starts right here, right now. Sarah and I have compiled a list of adjectives as a jumping off point for our necklace-creating adventure, we just need some help narrowing it down. What sort of piece do you want it to be? Edgy, patterned, monochromatic? It’s all up to you! The survey will close Friday, August 17, 2012 at midnight CST.

Rusty

Hey. Like the picture says, I’m Rusty. Part Irish Setter, part King Charles Spaniel. I’m about a year old and weigh around 20 pounds. I’m pretty awesome. You know, housebroken and stuff. I like to play, rawhide is my drug of choice, and I get along really well with other dogs. Kelly (er, Design Crush) has been fostering me for about a month now through a great organization called Safe Haven. They saved my life, literally. I go to adoption events every. single. weekend. But no one’s taken me home yet because I like to bark when all of the other dogs do, something about me not making a good showing there. Yadda, yadda, yadda. At Kelly’s I barely bark at all, only if Piper starts it first. I like to get up close and personal with her two cats, but only sniff ’em real good. At night I like to chill out on Kelly’s feet or snuggle with her, sometimes I even help her blog. When it’s time to go to bed I walk right into my crate, arrange my blankets, and am out like a light for a good 8-10 hours. So yeah, pretty awesome right? I love living here, but I’d really like to find my family. So maybe if you live in the Oklahoma City area (or close by) you might want to meet me and love me. You can email Kelly at designcrushing (at) gmail (dot) com if you’re interested! Peace out.

UPDATE! Rusty was adopted on 8-26-12 by a college couple from Wichita, KS. He’s finally found his forever home, and I’m going to miss this guy so much.

July

Celebrated 5 years of Design Crush!
Found the one plant that likes my gardening style (or lack thereof).
Peanut the Cat turned 12 July 4th.
Plenty of hot days and golden hours.

Took on this little stray girl (Yorkie/Cairn Terrier mix), Bebe, as a foster
And a few days later this handsome fella (Irish Setter/King Charles Spaniel) mix).
We celebrated Piper’s 4th adoption/birthday July 28th.
I spent lots of mornings here decompressing and trying to slow down.

Celebrated

Remember last month when I mentioned Design Crush was turning five and we were going to celebrate? Well we did!

Two weeks ago a great group of friends and supporters spent an evening at The Wedge chowing down on gourmet pizzas and libations, including a fresh-squeezed grapefruit margarita named The Crush just for the occasion.

Danielle (left) and Susan (right) of EngageOKC were my lovely sponsors/coordinators who put everything together. And did I mention it was 100+ degrees outside? And that it took place on a patio? Because yes and yes, so please ignore my hair.

My favorite local stationery shop, Chirps and Cheers, put together these fun goodie bags for everyone who came to celebrate. You guys, Black Pearl erasers. I didn’t even know such a thing existed!

Two of my favorite ladies in attendance, Erin of CooperHouse and Kate of Cookie and Kate. Erin and her husband, Tim, are my web developers and instrumental to any sort of success Design Crush has experienced. And Kate made the best mixed berry bundt cake with lemon cream cheese glaze as a celebratory dessert.

My family (well, the few who live in Oklahoma) even made an appearance. My stepdad Bill, my mom Cynthia, and the infamous Pete!

I really can’t say thank you enough to everyone who reads Design Crush, I don’t have the words. However, as a small act of gratitude I have ten goody bags that I’m giving away to the first ten commenters. Please leave a valid email address to be contacted.

And here’s to five more!

6 Months

Pete, June 2012

I realize not everyone cares about what I’ve been going through as a caregiver to my step-grandfather. But with the crazy statistic that 65.7 million Americans care for a family member with a terminal illness, I thought I’d continue to share my journey with Pete and his Alzheimer’s with you. Previous posts here and here.

So here we are, six months later.

When I began taking care of my step-grandfather, Pete, I never thought it would go on for this long. We (me, my stepdad, and mom) are currently in the process of interviewing professional caregivers, both due to Pete’s deteriorating condition and my need to get back to my full-time job. I’m a graphic designer as well as a blogger, and while at first I was able to get work done during the day that’s no longer the case. I’m looking forward to the day when I can go back to being his advocate and not the bad guy.

Over the past three months Pete’s Alzheimer’s has progressed considerably, as we knew it most likely would. He essentially has no ability to make decisions, even simple ones like what he’d like to drink or eat. The repetitiveness that was already excessive has quadrupled, I think his short-term memory times out around thirty seconds which can be difficult for us to remember ourselves. It’s so easy to take such things for granted. One major change is Pete’s ability to become angry. He’s always been a very laid back guy, but now gets agitated and occasionally raises his voice. I know it’s the disease talking, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t hurt to be on the receiving end of. His appetite, which has always been robust, has gradually begun to wan and his voracious newspaper reading has lessened as well. He’s also speaking much less often and has a tough time carrying on even the smallest of conversations. This most likely has to do with his shrinking vocabulary, he’s embarrassed at using the wrong words which elude him frequently. He also nods off much more often (granted, he is 88) and stares off into his own world for sizable parts of the day. Sometimes when he wakes up he has no idea where he is, or where he slept the night before. All of it breaks my heart, but I can’t even begin to imagine how terrifying it must be for him living inside that mind.

A few months ago we did start looking at nursing homes, where he will eventually end up living out his days. Lucky for us there’s a fantastic place only a few miles from my house that caters specifically to Alzheimer’s patients. I visited first, them took my stepdad, and my mom will check it out soon as well. The administration and staff are incredible, the coordinator herself having lived through the disease with her own mother-in-law.

Because I’ve been writing these post in three month intervals, it’s scary to think what might happen between now and the next one. The man I help to take care of day in and day out is now a stranger most days. I cherish the small lucid moments he experiences when he gives me a hug and says just how much he loves me.
