When my mind feels jumbled up I like to search out things that are all sorted out, that’s how I came upon the work of Kristen Meyer. Her background runs the gamut from floral design to interior decorating to window design and prop styling, and she puts them all to use when creating these organized geometric flat lays out of themed groupings.
Los Ros is a Paris-based painter who got his artistic start doing graffiti. He carried that expressionistic style into his paintings, transforming what is clear into a blur. What I find most interesting about Ros is that he stops painting before he feels it’s actually finished…
“The moment where little is enough to suggest the stucture interests me, leaving the spectator’s imagination open at the moment the scene is starting to appear. Knowing when to stop before saying too much is what I tried to do.”
Feeling very inspired by artist Minas Halaj‘s Floral Minds series, which he explains so well below.
“The concept of beauty is a burdened one. We are living in a society that fears its adoration in contemporary art, yet intimidates its women into accepting it as their highest value. We have degraded it in mass media and the celebrity yet revere it above all other qualities of life. Beauty is a double edged sword an instrument of seduction and inaccessibility burdened sword an overwhelming distrust in the simple sensation of pleasure.”
Self-taught artist Kelly Seeber, AKA Urban Theory Studios, lives and works in Williamsburg, Virginia. Her work is a visual narrative of thought, memory, energy, and sensory experience through exploration and experimentation. The movement and kinetic energy of each piece feels so organic that I find myself drawn deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole.
Chicago-based graphic designer and illustrator Irina Kruglova is known for her strikingly colorful illustrations that focus on minimalism and precision. Inspired by modern culture, nature, and simple objects with great patterns and textures, Kruglova’s view of the world is lovely to behold.
That’s it, I want to be Tammy Kanat when I grow up. I’m amazed that after 11 years of Design Crush I have yet to feature her incredible weavings – it’s clearly time to remedy that. Kanat is a Melbourne-based textile artist who is constantly practicing innovation through her designs. Each piece feels intuitive, organic, and original, and I can’t help but smile when I look at one.
I saw these Reality Hand Hooks in person at a museum gift shop earlier this year and fell for them hard. The series, designed by Harry Allen, is inspired by the beauty of everyday objects. Four casts of the his hand provide a unique take on the idea of a shelf, vase, and hook that can be used in any number of ways. Choose from Bestow, C’mere, Grab, and Offer.
There’s not a lot of information to be had about Evelyn Tannus, the talented artist behind these sculpted and tattooed hands and forearms, but wow do I love them. Anyone else think she needs to become a tattoo apprentice asap?!
