Rebecca Roke-1-Design Crush

Rebecca Roke‘s architectural background sure does come in handy when designing her line of accessories for women. Her debut series reference celebratory leis, and are made individually from Roke’s collection of Japanese kimono silks, Indian cottons, and paper silks. Each crisply folded colorway is available in a limited edition of 20.

Cathy Daley

Cathy Daley-1-Design Crush

Toronto-based artist Cathy Daley works almost exclusively with black pastel on translucent vellum for her drawings, making the women in black tights that she prefers as subject matter almost seem to float in space. I love the magical, messy end result.

Drawing on persistent cultural images inspired by ballerina tutus, the garb of fairy-tale princesses and Barbie doll couture, my work investigates childhood memories of what it means to be female in Western culture and explores cultural representation of the feminine and the body. The drawings mine contemporary vocabularies of glamour, fashion, popular culture, cartoons, street signage, Hollywood cinema, fairy tales, and mythology, to examine the iconography of the feminine as it exists in the cultural imaginary, personal memory, and fantasy.

Miss Take

Miss Take-1-Design Crush

Beautiful, slightly creepy watercolors by Miss Take are just what the psychiatrist ordered. Ladies taking on the shape of colorful spiders, others with beehives full of disfigured bodies, and more. All looking morose in the face and making you wonder what lies beneath those layers of watercolor paint.

Vivian & Beverly Studio

Vivian and Beverly-1-Design Crush

Today I’m crushing on the hand pulled screen prints of Vivian and Beverly Studio, especially the pieces pulled on top of color wash paintings. I love the look of the controlled art over the abstract wash, all of which comes from either artist and shop owner Laura’s own photography or public vintage photographs. That woman riding a zebra is on my list!

Koen van den Broek

Koen van den Broek-1-Design Crush

I’ll confess, at first glance I was exactly sure what I was looking at in Koen van den Broek‘s work. But that’s one of the best kinds of art. The kind that makes you think you’re observing one thing and then BAM you realize it’s something entirely different. I don’t want to spoil that realization for you if you’re in the same boat that I was, so I’ll just let van den Broek’s work speak for itself.

Emily Proud

Emily Proud-1-Design Crush

You all know I love a good watercolor, and Emily Proud‘s work is right at the top of my list currently. Her work leaves me feeling relaxed and invigorated all at the same time thanks to the colors she works with. Turns out I might not be terribly far off from how Emily intended viewers of her art to feel…

Emily’s recent work explores watercolor’s physical and transcendent qualities through abstracted depictions of the California landscape. Her paintings are meditative and minimal, and often have a hazy atmosphere. Her work is influenced by geographical features, the environment, the weather, and current events.

Check out Emily Proud’s shop to make some of her work your own.

Tina Frey Designs

Tina Frey Designs-1-Design Crush

One of my favorite makers carried in Design Crush: The Marketplace is Tina Frey Designs. What at first appears to be glass is actually cast resin from Tina’s hand-sculpted pieces that she makes in San Francisco. The forms of her work are inspired by organic forms found in nature as well as objects found in worldwide travels, while the colors come from translucent popsicles, candies, and jellybeans. No wonder each piece looks so delicious!
