Food by Color

Food by Color-1-Design Crush

The type A organized side of me is quite excited by this editorial photo series entitled Food by Color by Funkytime. Yellow, red, orange, pink, and green foods were organized by color and photographed against a white backdrop, graphics were then added post-production in Photoshop. The entire series is just so pleasant, they’d make great prints for a kitchen don’t you think?

These lonely houses are stills from Maria Zaikinia‘s short film Landschaft Mit Haus and I adore them. The flatness makes me think of the midwest, while the variation on color convey the seasons those who live here experience. Watch the film below, and be sure to click over to read Maria’s artist statement on the project! (And if you check out her portfolio you’ll notice her penchant for architecture.)

Anona Studio-1-Design Crush

Anona Studio creates incredible hand-drawn and hand-painted seasonal print collections that can be featured on anything from a throw pillow to a skirt in the apparel and home decor industries. Bright colors and details adorn my favorite – Project #3. Inspired by origami, Anona created and printed their original designs onto paper and folded them before each one was photographed and digitally manipulated.

Dan Bob Thompson

Dan Bob Thompson-1-Design Crush

Los Angeles born and bred illustrator Dan Bob Thompson has an impressive history of working for both Disney and Cartoon Network before striking out on his own as a freelancer. I love the stories each of Dan’s pieces seem to tell in one quick glance, along with the interesting perspectives he takes on in his work. I’ll fore sure be keeping at eye on this one.

Rikka Sormunen

I’m crushing hard on the work of Finnish artist Rikka Sormunen these days, particularly her illustrations. In a world of crazy visual effects and all too real 3D simulations, it’s refreshing to lay eyes on some exceptionally beautiful 2D art. (And once again, there’s that muted retro color palette that I fall for time and time and time again!)

Notepads

Recently I’ve been depending a lot more on notepads than notebooks (the horror!). It’s so easy to tear a page off and tuck it into my planner, which is what I rely on more than anything else to run my life and this site. I realize it’s technically just as easy to rip a page out of a notebook, but I hate doing that. It’s not a sound or action-averse thing, I just prefer to keep my notebooks full of their paper. (Yes, I realize how strange that sounds.) Here are 11 notepads that’ve caught my eye and are begging for my professional list-maker skills to fill their pages!

Caroline Gomez

Caroline Gomez-1-Design Crush

Caroline Gomez‘s work ticks off all the boxes: natural, soft, and well-designed. I’m particularly drawn to her pastel ceramics and kitchenwares. Wouldn’t that planter look lovely suspended over my kitchen sink? I think so, too.

Helena Wurzel

Helena Wurzel-1-Design Crush

Butts have maybe never looked as good as these ones from Helena Wurzel! (Yup, that’s a sentence I never anticipated typing.)  Wurzel’s paintings of women lounging around and in pools are perfect for channeling that summertime vibe, and remind me of lazy days spent at the beach with girlfriends.  Helena’s paintings are on display at Jonathan Adler in Los Angeles and she also works as an independent artist for KateSpade Saturday – a busy lady for sure! Pick up some of her work for your own space at 20×200.
