Remember Carl Kleiner’s collaboration with IKEA on their cookbook? It was wildly popular, so who can blame them for joining forces again? This time the focus is on tableware and kicky color combinations. Only a few shots have been released and I can’t wait to see more.
I don’t normally share life events here, but the marriage of my friends Ashley and Justin is an exception. Not only did I get to watch their relationship develop and instantly know they were meant for one another, I also got to design their wedding invitations. Such a huge honor, as any designer knows.
Sometimes working for friends or family can end up being a nightmare, something else many designers are aware of. Ashley and Justin were the complete opposite, dream clients is the only term that pertains. The day they got engaged Ashley let me know they wanted me to create their invitations, and my mind started churning. I created a few mood boards and after a brief meeting with Ashley two versions came into being. They chose the one that I’d already fallen in love with –BONUS. After a few minor verbal changes, I followed up with designs for a small RSVP card (they opted for an email to save money) and an envelope label.
The ceremony and reception took place at Fort Reno, a historical military camp completely out in the middle of nowhere by my standards. There’s a small church on the grounds that looks straight out of Pulp Fiction, and also gets the best light I’ve ever seen with my own two eyes. The interior is completely wood-lined and lined on two sides with beautiful tall windows.
Everything about Ashley and Justin’s wedding day suited them perfectly, right down to Justin’s TOMS. This one’s gonna last.

I’m back from five crazy days spent at Alt Summit in Salt Lake City, and as you can tell it’s taking me longer than planned to get focused again. But more about my Alt experience later in the week, right now I want to talk about a new hobby I picked up quite accidentally while out of town. Calligraphy.
Saturday afternoon I stumbled into a calligraphy class taught by none other than the uber-talented Melissa Esplin. I’d tried my hand at some Old English calligraphy when I was about 10 years old, but hadn’t touched the stuff since then. (RE: I was awful at it.) I didn’t have high hopes of any latent talent on my part, but when Melissa introduced us to Copperplate calligraphy and I start experimenting with letter forms I was sort of instantly hooked. Now I can’t wait to research other forms of the art and get going, I’m completely drawn to the more modern scripts. Today I eyed this set from Terrain and love the look of the letters. Luckily we got to take our pen, nibs, and india ink home with us so I can get started right away. I also happily won a free online class Melissa is about to launch! Hooray for the unexpected.
Andrea Walsh’s faceted boxes are created from a fine bone china base and topped with a frosted glass lid. I can’t even pick a favorite color, so I guess I’d need one of each to store my baubles. (via Honey Kennedy)
Transfer is a genius cutting board design from chris&ruby that makes moving your food from board to plate a cinch. Something this clumsy girl is very excited about.
