French artist Armelle Caron reorganizes city maps according to the size of individual blocks. In the end they’re completely unrecognizable and have a new kind of beauty about them. Check out the rest of the cities in a larger format at Caron’s site.
Dan Cassaro (of Young Jerks fame) recently kicked off his latest collaborative project – 50 and 50: The State Mottos. Fifty designers were selected to represent their home state and graphically represent its motto. The only restriction was sticking to a three color palette that unifies the entire project. New mottos are being rolled out daily, so make sure and check back often!
Australian-born illustrator James Gulliver Hancock has always been in the practice of sketching out each city he visits. But when he moved to New York things weren’t so simple. He was overwhelmed. So the obvious thing to do was make an attempt at drawing every building in New York. He’s chronicling the process over on his blog and I love it.
PS: All of the drawings are available for purchase as prints.
I’m a little late in welcoming the Chinese New Year, but this video makes it all worth the wait. Promise. Super rad graphics with a well thought out execution. I’m not up to speed on my Chinese astrology, but from what I’ve read this year – the year of the Rabbit – is supposed to be the opposite of the last. Whereas the Lion (RE: 2010) is full of ups and downs and topsy-turviness, the Rabbit is more consistent with lots of emphasis on following the path laid out for you. I think I love you, 2011. {via The Fox is Black}
I subscribe to the idea that beauty is not only in the eye of the beholder, but also that it’s all around us. In the changing leaves, blooming flowers, and even detritus. It took me exactly .001 seconds to fall in love with pick a jewel. {via Daily Poetics}
I’ve been crushing on photographer Jordan Matter’s Dancers Among Us series for a few weeks now and still can’t get enough. Matter captures professional dancers on the streets of NYC doing ordinary tasks in a very dramatic fashion. You can check out the whole gallery here. {via designverb}
