The year 2016 feels a bit upside-down, so maybe that’s one reason Shang Chengxiang‘s photorealistic paintings resonate so deeply. Each piece digs into the human mind, inspired by dreams and observations Chengxiang has made in the world. A theme that appears in several paintings is smoke, which the artist uses to compare to the disappearing quality of dreams.
Portland photographer Christie MacLean did a fun take on the Victorian era concept of ghost mother portraits, using pets in place of children. Back in the day exposure times were lengthy, and babies and small children are notoriously difficult to keep still. Photographers would hide the mother, usually under draped fabric, so that they could hold the kiddo in an attempt to minimize movement. I love the way the relationship between pet and owner is so obvious in each of Christie’s photographs in this project, brilliant idea.

Folklore, nostalgia, and the past are all running themes in Kreh Mellick‘s fantastic works of art. I’m hard pressed to choose between her mirrored illustrations and the unexpected monochromatic red pieces, each telling a fictional story.
You’ll never look at felt the same way again after seeing Paolo del Toro‘s sculptural masks. My favorite, Baba of the Woods, is a collaboration with photographer Tifani Truelove that takes on an otherworldly feel thanks to the woodsy backdrop and red-eyed creature.
If you appreciate the unconventional, intuitive design, or just love tweezing, you need to check out Clemens Auer Tweezers. The unique circular shape was inspired by the pinching gesture and the end result nothing short of brilliant.
Addison Eaton is a wearer of many hats – artist, illustrator, and designer. Essentially a creator of all the things. I love his use of color, especially in the Caves series. In it Eaton exercised repeatedly painting and drawing the same image. There’s a lesson that can be applied to many levels of life right there, don’t you agree?
Beirut-based artist Michel El Hachem‘s skull and skeletal studies are inspired by Van Gogh’s painting Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette. Bones being something that both inspire fear and knowledge in humans, each piece created with oil on canvas is equal parts macabre and fascinating.
Artists Lola Dupre and Lisa Carletta put their talented creative selves together to create this editorial – PIECES – for Eye Republic magazine. Stylish eyewear is featured through distorted imagery, repeated features, and surreal fashion with a most intriguing end result.
The first thing I noticed about Haand‘s pottery pieces is that several can be used in multiple ways – kitchen, bedroom dresser, dining table, and more. Each piece is designed by Mark Warren and crafted by hand in Eli Whitney, North Carolina at the Haand workshop by a small team of dedicated makers. The care and attention paid to each “farmhouse futuristic” piece is abundantly clear.
