Some of Hyun Ryoung Kim‘s observations about her own art struck a chord deep down, that resonates on some level I’m only aware of every once in awhile.

It seems all is spontaneous and unintended in disorder, however one can observe some sort of order in them just like the universe, nature, human, birth, death, and relationships between them.

Brenda Cablayan

I’ve been jonesing for a vacation in the worst way this month. Thankfully the snow days have disappeared and the sun has been hanging around a bit more, but I’m still daydreaming about the tropics. Brenda Cablayan‘s landscapes of Hawaiian landscapes and urban life are definitely either making it better or making it worse.

Ali Cavanaugh

You’ve probably heard of (or know someone) who lost one of their senses at an early age and in turn found that the others were all heightened to compensate. Artist Ali Cavanaugh lost her hearing at the age of two through spinal meningitis. She looks at it as a blessing in disguise because it made her more sensitive to the people around her and the unspoken language of the human body, all of which shows in her unique paintings of watercolor layered over kaolin clay.

Gus Hughes

I’m having a moment of attraction towards heavy-handed paintings, basically the art of smears right out of the tube layered on thick and intense. Today I’m admiring the work of Ireland’s Gus Hughes.

Kerri Rosenthal

Kerri Rosenthal‘s inspiration flows from her past working in the fashion industry and northern Europe, as well as her present focus of contemporary furnishings and life in Connecticut. I can see hints and glimpses of these elements in her works on canvas with their fluidity and color choices.

Annie Kevans

Annie Kevans is a master of minimal portrait paintings, and everyone seems to know it. Kevans has sold a series of 30 paintings of dictators to Charles Saatchi, collaborated with Jean Paul Gaultier on a series of 32 muses, and created a series of presidents’ mistresses among others. Her latest is Women and the History of Art, which I very much appreciate.

Hiroyuki Izutsu

Tokyo’s Hiroyuki Izutsu is a trained illustrator, but you wouldn’t know it from looking at his paintings. The most grabbing series is entitled Don’t Give Up Japan. Hiroyuki put brush to canvas after the tsunami and ensuing struggles as a tribute to his country.

Caroline Larsen

At first glance I guessed Caroline Larsen‘s works were embroidered, or maybe a modern take on tapestries. Both wrong. (You’ve caught on that this is one of my favorite games by now, right?) They’re freakin’ oil paintings. Tiny daubs and strokes create the textured appearance of each vintage-style piece. Check out a close-up of one of the pieces below – they essentially border on being sculptures.
