Pacific Northwest born and bred Calvin Ross Carl creates work that looks good enough to eat. The flat geometry of Carl’s paintings could pass for intricately decorated cakes with the heavy handed paint that gets layered on in such a premise way. I’ll be right back – off to grab a spoon!
I’m three shades of excited to share something that’s been in the works for months – Design Crush The Marketplace has opened! I’ve never made it to Mexico, and it seems like everyone and their brother has vacationed there in the past few months. I sorely need a getaway, but the dreamy works of Anna Topuriya will have to do for now. And couldn’t use a little magic?
The freeform abstract paintings of Yolanda Sánchez are definitely happy-makers. To me they look like professional finger paintings, like if a kid really stuck with it and advanced his or her technique to the utmost level this would be the end result. I’m all in.
Two worlds collide in the form of Jessica Harrison‘s porcelain figures wearing voluminous ball gowns, all while inked up with neck-to-wrist sailor tattoos. I love everything about this collection, from the wistful looks upon their sweet faces to the intricacies of the very accurate ink jobs adorning them. (In the past she’s also explored gowned porcelain ladies in a more sinister fashion.)

Longtime friends Orlin Mantchev and Amrita Chandra have a shared love of art, travel, and nature. Their studio – LandStyle – is a celebration of landscapes that are dear to them both, and Orlin’s abstract representations put them on full display. The goal is create affordable paintings and prints that are more accessible to art lovers everywhere, which is a mindset I can definitely get behind.
Who knew one color of acrylic paint on a piece of 20 x 30″ watercolor paper could elicit such emotion? Apparently Macarena Ruia-Tagle because her Atmosphere Series covers the entire palette. Not only am I in awe that that’s acrylic paint (rather than magic), I also feel completely drawn into the center from the edges.

My walls are practically bursting at the seams with art, but that doesn’t stop me from ogling everything at Quercus & Co. The Sydney-based wallpaper design and printing company shows off an obvious love of pattern and color and has a gift for combining the two. Every design available is either hand-painted or drawn before being printed onto eco-friendly paper. I’d be lying if I didn’t say my wish list has just grown by an item or two!
Maybe it’s the 90+ degree weather we’ve been experiencing for the past several days or maybe it’s the promise of a getaway to the shore, but I’m entirely entranced by the work of Monica Ramos. Particularly her beach scenes that run edge to edge in color palettes that can make you feel the temperature.

You know how that moment feels when you discover the artist you’d like to paint the portrait of yourself that’s sure to hang above your ancestors’ fireplaces for millennia? Oh, you don’t? Cause I do. Her name is Erin Fitzpatrick and her style is crazy good. And she takes commissions which is sort of the key to this whole imaginary endeavor anyway.
