10 Warm + Hearty Soups

During the winter months I practically live off of homemade soups. It’s just so easy to make a big pot and eat off of it for a few days or freeze half of it for later, and it’s such a comforting food. I have my favorite go-to, but these ten are on the short list for the next few months! Just click on each image to go to the recipe.

Starry Light

Starry Light-1-Design Crush

I’m digging not only the Starry Light, but also its clever tongue-in-cheek name! The constellations of the Northern Hemisphere are projected onto your walls and ceiling when lit. Starry Light all began as a piece of art and after a year in development went into product mode, it’s now available in several colors and manufactured by hand.

Merry (Orthodox) Christmas!

John-Carey-Design-Crush

PHOTO: John Carey

I’m one of the lucky ones who gets to celebrate not one, but two Christmases every year. My mother’s side of the family is Serbian Orthodox, so I grew up taking January 6th and 7th off from school every year and today I’m taking some time off to celebrate with my massive family. (If you’re curious about Orthodox Christmas and why the calendar is different, you can learn more here.) See you back here tomorrow!

01/ After Christmas, discarded Christmas trees.
02/ The 124 United States that could have been (fascinating to the geography nerd).
03/ These miniature models of artists in their studios are incredible.
04/ A polka-dot bomber from World War II.

07/ Swing Rest is just begging for a nap.
08/ Jack the Australian cattle dog balances the 12 days of Christmas!
09/ Animal Lace is one of the prettiest examples of 3D printing I’ve seen yet.
10/ Room-sized collages of colorful cups and paper.

This week (and last week) on Design Crush:
I Love the World, a killer graphic series of cities the designer has visited.
My (imaginary) New Year’s Eve party went off without a hitch!
The best mortar and pestles from Tahir Mahmood.
This textile series – Still – shows off nature at her best.
We hope you had a very merry Christmas and a happy start to 2014!

Happy 2014!

Amanda Pham-Design Crush

Happy New Year! Saying 2014 feels like we’re living in the future, don’t you think? This year is going to be a bit crazy, I already have a few major things penned on my calendar and I’m hoping to add a few more. My focus (or resolution, if you prefer) is going to be on living in the present. Like all of us I have the habit of thinking of the what ifs of the past and the what will bes of the future, and I’d really like to change that. Cheers to the best year yet!

Still

Still-1-Design Crush

Christmas Eve seemed an exceptionally appropriate time to share these pieces from Still. Take time to reflect on the beauty of the simple things in life and the wonders of the world.
