Yago Hortal-1-Design Crush

Layer upon layer of acrylic paint on linen – this is the sort of painting I want to stare at from about an inch away, so I can figure out the logistics behind it all. Yago Hortal has a definitive style that I’m happy to get lost in even from afar. (via The Jealous Curator)

Shannon Finley‘s acrylics on canvas are perfect parts symmetry and reckless abandon. I feel like that’s a decent metaphor for life really, and that’s what Finley’s work is giving me as a takeaway.

Leslie Fandrich‘s paintings make me happy, plain and simple. Her use of bright color palettes is fantastic, as is her ability to hop between watercolors and acrylics. (Both vastly different to work with, if you’ve never tried.) Leslie’s abstracts leave my emotions swirling and my mind spinning in a very good way. I’m so happy that she’s decided to set up shop.

Think back to when you were 21 years old. How you filled your days, your nights, and the in between. Then think of Houston-based artist Jaylon Israel Hicks, who was born in 1993 and is busy “expressing his ideas about life through abstraction.” Chew on that a little. (via Booooooom)

Gulten Imamoglu-1-Design Crush

I have an enormous new artist crush, and the object of my affections is Turkish painter Gulten Imamoglu. At first look I thought her colorful and dynamic paintings were actually floating ink experiments, the fluidity just seemed too good. Gulten talks of life and death, natural disasters, infinity and dreams as to what she’s creating within her art. What I see is a place where I could easily escape the daily realities of life.

Commissioned

Cutomized-1-Design Crush

Have you ever commissioned a portrait of yourself, your family, or even as a gift for someone else? I can’t say that I have, but it’s something I’ve been thinking of more and more lately. It seems like every way I turn there’s an incredible illustrator or painter showing me yet another reason why I need one of me and my crazy pet menagerie. Here are just three that I’ve got my eye on, top to bottom they are My Little Buffalo, Jolly Edition, and Lili di Prima.

Lisa Krannichfeld

Lisa Krannichfeld-1-Design Crush

One winter during high school I took a watercolor class that was held on Wednesday evenings. As a person and as an artist I’ve always gravitated toward things that gave me a modicum of control, and working with watercolors made my feel anything but. However, when I look at Lisa Krannichfeld‘s ethereal women in The Glass Menagerie series it makes me realize that sometimes that lack of control is what makes something beautiful.
