Dan Bob Thompson

Dan Bob Thompson-1-Design Crush

Los Angeles born and bred illustrator Dan Bob Thompson has an impressive history of working for both Disney and Cartoon Network before striking out on his own as a freelancer. I love the stories each of Dan’s pieces seem to tell in one quick glance, along with the interesting perspectives he takes on in his work. I’ll fore sure be keeping at eye on this one.

Rikka Sormunen

Rikka Sormunen-1-Design Crush

I’m crushing hard on the work of Finnish artist Rikka Sormunen these days, particularly her illustrations. In a world of crazy visual effects and all too real 3D simulations, it’s refreshing to lay eyes on some exceptionally beautiful 2D art. (And once again, there’s that muted retro color palette that I fall for time and time and time again!)

Marc Aspinall

Marc Aspinall-1-Design Crush

Marc Aspinall has an illustration style that will surely stand the test of time. You can see the mid-century influences plain as day, so much so that I would never guess that these pieces weren’t created decades ago. Marc also shows off a great use and understanding of color reminiscent of the golden age.

LaMalconttenta

LaMalconttenta-1-Design Crush

Let’s just make today all about summer, shall we? This time I’m talking about LaMalconttenta, a line by the uber talented Lydia de la Piñera. Ceramics, prints, jewelry, and more that convey the casual effortlessness of the warmest days of the year are all present in Lydia’s Etsy shop. All with the perfect balance of white space and intensely pigmented colors to balance it all out.

My walls are practically bursting at the seams with art, but that doesn’t stop me from ogling everything at Quercus & Co. The Sydney-based wallpaper design and printing company shows off an obvious love of pattern and color and has a gift for combining the two. Every design available is either hand-painted or drawn before being printed onto eco-friendly paper. I’d be lying if I didn’t say my wish list has just grown by an item or two!

Gingiber Cards

Gingiber Cards-1-Design Crush

I’m so excited to share that one of my favorite illustrators – Stacie Bloomfield of Gingiber – is launching a line of cards this month at the National Stationery Show! I’ve been a fan of Gingiber since its start, and can’t wait to stock up on the thirty designs being offered. Each card features an original illustration and is backed with a coordinating hand drawn pattern. The fox above has always been one of my favorites that Stacie has drawn, and I’m looking forward to owning a miniaturized version sometime soon!

People You May Meet

People You May Meet-1-Design Crush

When I first saw the work of People You May Meet – aka Tracie Pouliot – I knew we had to work together. Quirky might as well be my middle name (I don’t have one, so the spot is wide open), and Tracie’s style is exactly that. I’ve been wanting a family portrait of sorts with me and my animal menagerie for some time and Tracie was totally into making it happen. I sent her a bunch of photos of the six of us and she captured everyone’s personalities so, so well. I wish you could have seen the size of the smile on my face when my illustration showed up in the mail this week! For now our family portrait is hanging on the refrigerator until I get it framed, but I suspect I’ll be working with Tracie again and again in the future for one of a kind gifts.
