I love a good scientific print, don’t you? Maiden Voyage has taken on the task of showing us not only what a sailor is made of, but also the inner workings of a gentleman. Both prints were created using an old-school offset press method, making each one special and unique.
I’ve always been fascinated by space (thank you, Space Camp!) and I know I’m not alone. Somehow we human beings have managed to begin exploring that big, black void with the hope that we’ll be able to unlock all of its mysteries. Artist Justin Van Genderen has created a series of six graphic posters focused on the U.S.’s side of the space race – Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo – three type-based and three more scientific in design. I think you guys knows by this point that I’m a major geography nerd, and just how much I love projects centered around how awesome geography is. (And if you didn’t know, well now ya do.) My latest fascinations are Melangerie‘s State by Food and State by Celebrity prints, perfectly illustrated and graphic.
Today we’re talking about art in an often neglected space: the kitchen! With all of the cabinets, countertop necessities, and inevitable space issues most kitchens present it’s easy to see how the walls go under our radar. In fact, the only space my kitchen offers in the wall department is the backsplash. In the four years I’ve owned my home I haven’t really bothered to do much with it, but after some thought I realized it’s the perfect place for a miniature art gallery!
That’s why I’ve partnered with UGallery, to make my once boring backsplash the exact opposite. I hung two prints, but you could also set frames on the counter and lean them against the wall. I wanted the art to be the focus, so I opted for simple glass frames with no edge. I hope to continue filling in the space over the next few months for the total gallery effect.
Congratulations to comment #22 Kirsten!

Check out Jason Dean’s latest screen print, Day and Night at Christmas. It features a few well-known holiday movie scenes and glows when the lights go out, in true light up night fashion.
I haven’t posted anything about Hurricane Sandy, and the reason is that I still haven’t been able to wrap my head around it. The day before it struck I was making my way back from the Electrolux Design Lab event in Milan, and after narrowly making a connection in Frankfurt was thrilled to have landed stateside in Newark. Only to have my flight cancelled upon arrival. Instead of holing up in a hotel for the two days the airport was already scheduled to be closed, I opted to rent a car and drive through the night to my hometown in Pittsburgh where I spent three days before finally getting a flight out. Inconvenience, that’s really the only price I had to pay.
The devastation faced by New York and New Jersey is unbelievable, the photos don’t even make sense. The level of destruction, the help needed, the cost to rebuild. All of it. I hope you’ve all done at least a little something to help out those in a world of hurt, and if you haven’t here’s a starting point. Print Aid NYC has gathered a group of artists to create a poster around the idea of light. Each will be printed in limited edition runs of 50, new pieces will be added daily, and 100% of the proceeds go toward the Mayor’s Fund For Hurricane Relief.
Hi friends! Erin from Apartment 34 here and I’m thrilled to help keep Design Crush warm while Miss Kelly is away. And since she’s in one of my very favorite places in the world – Italia – probably unearthing amazing design, I decided to take a crack at something similar. Only from the comforts of my couch (I begged her to take me in her suitcase but va’ bene (so it goes!).
So I give you Four Design Crush-worthy Finds. I do hope you all agree! Bon Viaggio Kelly, and thanks again for having me.
Elizabeth Mayville’s Top Knot series might as well be entitled Design Bloggers. I mean, top knots and striped shirts are practically our unspoken uniform! So it goes without saying that we should all be required to own one of her prints. (via The Daily Spark)
