Taco Night

When I was kid summer meant Hank’s. Hank’s was a roadside stand that sold eight million flavors of frozen custard out of a window on one side of the building and Mexican food out of a window on the other. It only opened for the warm months of the year and when it did lines were well out into the parking lot. We usually went around 9 0’clock at night after my dad got home from work or on a Sunday. I’d order a tostada or burrito and this frozen drink that tasted like a Creamsicle called an Orange Dream. I’d make my dad order refried beans, but only so I could eat the layer of cheese off the top. I don’t remember a lot of things about my childhood, but those memories are good ones. By default Mexican food gives me warm tingly feelings. (As always, click on the image to be taken to the recipe.)

Margaritaville

Tequila is one of my favorite libations, so it figures that margaritas are high on my list as well. Preferably not too sweet, on the rocks, no salt. And not that you need a good reason to mix (or shake) up a good one, but it is Cinco de Mayo… so you’re sort of obligated. (As always, click on the image to be taken to the recipe.)

Pesto

I didn’t discover pesto until my mid-20s, late in life by my estimate. But once I did, whoa, there was no going back. (The same goes for chutney, but that’s another story for another time.) It’s amazing how something so simple could be full of so much flavor, and versatile as all get out. Pesto is one of those things that turns everything it touches to gold. Don’t believe me?

Banana Cream Pie

PHOTO + RECIPE: Martha Stewart

I’m in charge of dessert for dinner this Sunday and this Banana Cream Pie looks unbelievable. But I’ve never before made a Pate Brisee crust and am wondering if I’m being a bit too ambitious. And now I have to stop looking at this because it’s lunchtime and I’m starving, which always leads to bad food decisions…

Bruschetta

Not always the easiest appetizer to eat one-handed (wine or a cocktail is in the other, obviously), but bruschetta is one of my favorites. Can you sense a theme with my go-tos? They’re always versatile and can swing savory or sweet. It makes me feel like a real gastronomist when I can throw this and that together and know the outcome is going to be palatable. Different variations on bruschetta can also be served hot or cold, nice when you have a tried and true recipe that you want to warm up for winter or cool down for summer. Take a look at these bad boys. (As always, click on the image to be taken to the recipe.)
