Antoine Cordet‘s mixed media portraits seem just about perfect for the overcast days of mid-November. The acrylic paintings with marker on canvas feel moody and emotional, kind of how I feel getting geared up for the holidays.

Sarah Illenberger is an artist in the truest sense of the word, she can do a little bit of everything it seems. In fact, we wrote about her last January for something completely different. This ten part series – Wonderplants – was created during a 6-week stint in Portugal, using nothing but plants and supplies from local craft stores. Art really is all around us if we just stop and look around.

Annie O’Dorisio

An addition of wool to Annie O’Dorisio‘s pen and ink drawings takes them to another level, another plane. She explains that the wool is not only a way to add texture and sculptural dimension to each piece, it’s also an element of warmth added to what can be rather masculine drawings. A practice in restraint, no doubt.

Matt Leines‘ mixed media art seems just about as perfect as it gets for the week of Halloween. His drawings and paintings are rich in detail and color, the influence of his youth spent in New Jersey during the ’80s is pleasantly obvious.

Izziyana Suhaimi

Singapore-based Izziyana Suhaimi is a multi-talented artist, that’s for sure. Embroidered touches embellish her beautiful illustrations as she explores “evidence of hand and time” in each piece.

Embroidery for me is a quiet and still act, where each stitch represents a moment passed. The building of stitches then becomes a representation of time passing and the final work is like a physical manifestation of time – a time object. Each stitch is also a recording of the maker’s thoughts and emotions.

Oliver Hickmet

Each of Oliver Hickmet‘s latest pieces explores his understanding of where reality lies within the making, creating, and consumption of tourism fantasies. He starts with a picturesque postcard that’s then overlaid with actual soil from the place before being scanned and printed onto silk, and lastly being draped over a pink canvas stretcher.

Xuan Chen / Light Threads

Xuan Chen‘s mixed media pieces are tons of fun – all of that color couldn’t be anything but! My favorite series is Light Threads, where Chen’s grasp of textures and shapes really comes into play. The use of overlapping tones gives each piece so much depth.
