Julie Blackmon / Domestic Vacations

Julia Blackmon-1-Design Crush

Julie Blackmon‘s Domestic Vacations explores what it means to be a Jan Steen household – a home in disarray, full of rowdy children and boisterous family gatherings. The Dutch proverb originated in the 17th century after the painter who depicted the intersection of art and life. The result of Blackmon’s exploration are both imagined and autobiographical and 100% modern.

Few things say scorching summer day like a melted popsicle. In Transmogrify Michael Massaia destroys more than a dozen varieties in the name of art – from Hello Kitty to a classic Neapolitan ice cream sandwich. The end result might not look as delicious, but they’re definitely more beautiful.

Feather Studies

Feather Study-1-Design Crush

I have a small collection of feathers that I keep in a porcelain container in my dining room, up on a shelf where I only I know about it. I’ve collected them over the past few years, like little stories left behind by the birds who grew them. These Feather Studies seems especially timely,  since the birds are chirping and singing outside my windows and acknowledging spring once again.

Black + White Art

Pernille Møller Folcarelli-Design Crush

Pernille Folcarelli

There’s something simple yet striking about black and white art. Whatever form the subject matter takes – illustration, photograph, sculpture – the end result tends to be graphic and attention grabbing. Now that’s a theme I can back 100%.

Meghann Riepenhoff

Meghann Riepenhoff-1-Design Crush

Atlanta-born, San Francisco-residing Meghann Riepenhoff is a photographic artist, and her series Littoral Drift has me feeling all of the things. It’s inspired by our relationship with the landscapes that surround us. Each work is made from camera-less cyanotypes made in collaboration with the landscape and the ocean as they interact with the photographic materials.
