The Flavour Thesaurus

I can’t lie, what first drew me to The Flavour Thesaurus was the graphic cover. But after reading a few reviews on Niki Segnit’s book I was drawn towards the concept, which examines foods by flavor. Segnit teaches you about pairing flavors, what to do with that extra whatever you have lying around, and basically how to become your own on-the-fly chef. It’s also really well organized, set up along the format of Roget’s College Thesaurus. (Which, FYI, I won a copy of in the 5th grade Spelling Bee.)

Glass Jar Goods

There’s something about foods packaged in glass jars that makes it seem that much more delectable. Maybe it’s that we can actually see what we’re getting, or that it makes us think of someone lovingly preparing the goods in their kitchen. Or maybe even that there’s something we can take away from the experience itself, the jar. Whatever the reason, I’m on board with it.

Chocolate by Design

When it comes to design, chocolatiers seem to know what’s what. Maybe it’s because making chocolate is an artform it itself, so they can appreciate great graphics. Or perhaps they just know what sort of look is going to sell their product and represent their brand best. Whatever the case, they know that a good presentation is everything. Here are a few of my favorites that I’ve spotted lately.

Communal Table

Cookbooks without imagery bug me. As in I won’t buy them. Cookbooks with photos are good, cookbooks with illustrations are better. Communal Table is a new series of cookbooks about sharing the love gathering together to eat. Book One focuses on casual settings with a great list of contributors and illustrated by Caroline Hwang. Even better (as if that were possible), proceeds for the series will be donated to a food-related organization. Book One is supporting Philadelphia-based non-profit The Food Trust. {via oh joy!}

Kettle Confections Nougat

Just face it, nougat is a beautiful thing. It’s my favorite part of most candy bars and it’s also a fun word. Kettle Confections is in the business of French nougat, and this here is an eight piece sampler with Vanilla French Almond, Chocolate-Orange French Almond, Black Cherry French Almond, Cafe au Lait French Almond, Green Tea French Almond, Pistachio-Cranberry, Pistachio, and Strawberry Ice Cream Almond French nougats. And that is drool on my keyboard.
