Diem Chau

Embroidery thread is Diem Chau‘s slingshot and porcelain cups and plates are the target. I’m loving the unexpectedness of this pairing of common mediums and the delicate minimal outcome. Her current work explores the periphery of moments forgotten and faded or too brief for us to retain.

Alexandra Levasseur

Alexandra Levasseur‘s creates her masterpieces with acrylic and pencil on wood, and each one has an all around calming presence (she typed as she watched election poll coverage). Each scene is manipulated to reveal something unexpected, the Milky Way here, an ocean view there.

Derek Root

Oil, wax, canvas, and wood. Those four things, along with some serious vision and blending skills, are all that go into each of Derek Root‘s creations. Feels a little like you’re walking through clouds though, no?

Joey Slaughter

An artist can nearly always describe their work better than anyone else, and such is the case with mixed media creator Joey Slaughter. His color transitions hold much meaning, as do the combined contributions of man and machine to each piece.

My paintings and constructions investigate the “look” of digital information as it is transmitted around us, providing an overabundance of stimuli and therefore, distractions. I create abstract works that references conversations, usually a direct communication between two people. I wonder how a simple conversation is absorbed between people, how they’re connected, and what the conversational wavelengths would look like. The main idea is to create abstractions from conversations if you could see sound waves from analogue and digital devices passing through and around people.

Sandra Chevrier

Montreal-based artist Sandra Chevrier is creating some of the best pop art I’ve seen in quite some time, mixing her own painting and illustrations with comics. Her work begs you to take the time to look at every detail, dissecting the male-dominated fantasy world from the oppressed woman lying beneath.

Camille Chew / Deity Masks

camille-chew-2-design-crush

Only ten days until Halloween, and eight until my friends’ party, and I have yet to decide upon a costume! (Though a Nasty Woman shirt is the current frontrunner.) Camille Chew‘s beautifully constructed deity masks made out of digital prints that are painted, collaged, embellished, stamped, beribboned, beaded, wired, glittered, and more would be perfect. And yes, it would then be hung on my wall for all of eternity.

John Holcomb

John Holcomb is a self-taught artist painting with Benjamin Moore’s Aura line and combining it with oil pastel linework. I love the combination of large fields of flat painted color paired with delicately drawn lines. Holcomb’s creations often feel like a distant relative of hotel room clown paintings, particularly the treatment of colors in each face. (I mean this as a great compliment.)

Addison Eaton / Caves

addison-eaton-1-design-crush

Addison Eaton is a wearer of many hats – artist, illustrator, and designer. Essentially a creator of all the things. I love his use of color, especially in the Caves series. In it Eaton exercised repeatedly painting and drawing the same image. There’s a lesson that can be applied to many levels of life right there, don’t you agree?

Angela Deane / Ghost Photographs

angela-deane-1-design-crush

IT’S OCTOBER! And I’m ready to add some extra horror-themed art to the mix. Some silly, some unnerving, all amazing. Today it’s by way of Angela Deane‘s mixed media Ghost Photographs, found photos painted with acrylic and given a whole new lease on life as Deane explores the idea of having memories. Ghosts driving, ghosts swimming, you really need to check out the extensive ongoing project for yourself – there are even a few witches thrown in for good measure.
